hit the ground running

I'm having kind of a hard day. Actually, I'm having kind of a hard month, but yesterday my beloved Goderich, town of (some of) my childhood, prettiest little town in Ontario, where I just was on Saturday, was hit by a tornado. One person was killed, several were injured, and the property damage was pretty bad, I think. I hope no one I know was injured (my mom is on phone duty trying to find out), but looking at the pictures of places I know so well, it's hard to imagine that they didn't sustain damage of some kind. I was just there, how can everything be so different now?

Also, my Facebook is full of tributes to Jack Layton and it is making me even sadder. :(

However, my weekend on the whole was good. Let me tell you about it, with pictures.

Saturday, my mom and I had planned a trip to the beach in Goderich, and when we got there, it was kind of windy, and the lake was sort of rough, and it was clearly going to rain in the near future, but we decided to stick it out for a bit.

I knitted a little bit while my mum was off procuring food, and then I decided to try out the water (my mum declined). It was nice! It wasn't really cold at all, and the waves were fun. I was in for five or ten minutes, and then my mum started to come in, but wussed out around knee-depth. She said it was cold, but it WAS NOT. She's just spoiled from two years in Vietnam. So we got out, and then there was lightning off in the distance, so I went to change out of my swimsuit.

We packed up our stuff in the midst of the mass exodus from the beach, and got into the car just as the rain started coming down.

"Well," my mum said, "let's go to Listowel!" (There is a yarn outlet store in Listowel, and we had debated going there, but decided to go to Goderich instead. Rained out of Goderich? Listowel!)

So we went to the yarn store in Listowel, and there were tents set up outside, because they were having a tent sale! Also:

Alpacas! There were four alpacas set up in a teeny tent, for viewing and petting. One of them was only three weeks old! (For some reason, I did not take a picture of the baby. But he was so sweet! Possibly the softest creature I have ever touched!) Last week my mom asked me what I wanted to do with my life, and I said, "Sheep farm." Upon arrival at the alpaca tent, I revised that to "Alpaca farm."

And then we bought all the yarn. (Yesterday, my dad asked me, "What's in that bag over there?" I said, "Yarn." He laughed and said, "No, the big one, the garbage bag." I said, "Yarn." For some reason, the yarn outlet bags its yarn with garbage bags. We bought a lot of yarn.)

Then we had a rant-inducing pit-stop at A&W, where we had not been since I was in high school, and will not go ever again, most likely. Then it started to rain, and we came home, thunderstorms following us all the way.

Then we all watched a movie (Sky High), with my mom knitting her baby blanket (recipient: unknown) and me knitting my crown.

Did I tell you about my crown? I shall. On Sunday we were invited to a housewarming/birthday party at my cousin's house, because they bought a house, and her daughter just turned two. So I got it in my head to knit her something, and after several miserable project failures, on Saturday morning I got up and started knitting an improvisational crown/headband/thing.

And it was awesome! Or, at least not a horrifying failure.

I made it with ties so it would be adjustable, and so I wouldn't have to call my cousin and make her measure her baby's head. And anyway, if you can't wear ridiculous fluffy, sparkly, crown headbands when you're two, when can you? In any case, little Miss Bea wore it with glee (I did not get pictures, but I know other people did, and I hope someone will send me a copy), and my cousin said I should make more and sell them, so I am counting it as a win.

And now it is Monday. Alas.
