I've been meaning to do this for a while, since whenever
monkiedude did it. And now I've actually gotten around to it. Go me!
The 20 most played songs on my iPod. Which is really just speaking to my iPod's taste within the greater umbrella of my taste, since I only ever listen to it on shuffle.
1. [
Gumboots ] -- Paul Simon. I go back and forth about what is my actual favourite Paul Simon song, but this is definitely a strong contender. Top 5, definitely.
2. [
After the Rain ] -- Rex Goudie. Okay. See. Rex Goudie was a contestant on the last season of Canadian Idol, and he was (is) adorable. He ultimately came in second, but in one of the preliminary rounds he came out and did a cover version of this Blue Rodeo song, just him and a lighter, and it was awesome. This is the studio version, recorded later for the CI compilation CD, but I still love it. Even though I feel a little bit lame about it.
3. [
Stealin' ] -- Arlo Guthrie. This is a song I've known my whole life, although I only heard a recorded version of it for the first time a year or so ago when
_jules_ answered my request for one. Stealin' is a standard at the music nights my parents have been having since before I was born. This version is a little faster and more rollicking than the version we do, but it's still good.
4. [
Oh My Gosh ] -- Basement Jaxx. I'm a bit surprised that this is so frequently played. I don't remember hearing it that often, but hey. I only have three Basement Jaxx songs, and I like all three of them.
5. [
Hard to Handle ] -- Black Crowes. This song is so thoroughly tied into high school for me. To high school and MuchMusic, back when MuchMusic was still good.
6. [
Cinderella ] -- Britney Spears. Oh, Britney. This isn't even one of my favourite favourite Britney songs, and I still love it.
7. [ Love the One You're With ] -- Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. I always like to pretend that the "Young" part of the equation doesn't exist, because I've got a long-standing dislike for Neil Young, and it's hard to mesh that with these songs that I love. Still, it's not like you can ever hear him or anything. So it's fine. (I need to fix this link when I get home tonight.)
8. [
Golden Years ] -- David Bowie. I love this song so much. It's got a very sexy vibe to it, without being all SEX SEX SEX, which I generally don't find sexy at all. Also, it's in my favourite scene from A Knight's Tale.
9. [
Los Angeles, I'm Yours ] -- Decemberists. I'm so not up on the music that kids these days are listening to, so although I actually have several Decemberists songs that I acquired somewhere, I know nothing at all about them. But I do know that this song was on a CD that
callsigns sent me, and I love it a lot. It's very decadent.
10. [
The House Rules ] -- Kane. Okay. So I have this thing about Christian Kane, where I don't find him attractive, at all, and I always hated his character on Angel a lot, and I don't really understand all the fuss about him. But I do know that this song is so, so awesome. And I lovehate listening to it, because it always gets stuck in my head for days and days, but man, I love to listen to it.
11. [
House at Pooh Corner ] -- Loggins & Messina. This is a song my mum used to sing to me when I was little, and I will sing it to my kids when I have some. I used to always pull it out as a lullabye for kids at camp or when I was babysitting. And sometimes I sing it to myself, just because.
12. [
Call It What You Want (The C&C Pump It Mix) ] -- New Kids on the Block. Ahaha. Oh, New Kids. I still love you. I wish I knew where my NKOTB slap bracelet went to. This version is from the Greatest Hits CD, and it's doubly special because it's got the guy from C & C Music Factory rapping on it. Woo!
13. [
Cast No Shadow ] -- Oasis. So when Oasis first came out, my friend S. and I had a reversal of our usual roles, in which I would normally babble on and on about some great band, and she would ignore me for a year or so and then be all, "OMG! Why didn't you tell me this band was so awesome?!" In this case, she was on and on about Oasis forever, and all about how hot Liam was, and the only video I'd ever seen of them was the one with the bowling and man, Liam is so not hot in that video, plus I don't really like that song. But eventually she made me watch a concert on TV or something, and this song hooked me, and well, I do love Oasis. Even though I still don't think they're hot.
14. [
Fatman ] -- Pop Will Eat Itself. Mmmm, PWEI. In high school, this boy that I had a huge crush on and I used to play Hangman in English class, and one day we were playing using band names, and when it was my turn, I drew out all the blanks for Pop Will Eat Itself, and he guessed it immediately, without guessing a single letter, and I've never quite gotten all of my heart back.
15. [
Freeway ] - Salmonblaster. Salmonblaster were a local band who I think had one album and then went away. I understand very few of the lyrics in this song, but I don't think that it matters very much.
16. [
Marcus Said ] -- Sloan. One of the oldest songs by my favourite band in the world, I did not learn to appreciate it fully until their live album came out. I'm not sure why that is. Also, this isn't the live version. But I appreciate it anyway.
17. [
Kernel ] -- Yatsura. Yatsura (also known as Urusei Yatsura) are/were a Scottish band that I liked a lot during my big britpop phase, and their songs were either loud and punkish or kind of quiet and nice. This song is the latter.
18. [
Gene By Gene ] -- Blur. This song is so quirky and fun. And probably kind of disturbing, but mostly just quirky and fun. And pretty infinitely listenable, I find.
19. [ Hungry Like the Wolf ] - Duran Duran. What's to say? (I need to fix this link, too.)
20. [
Gimme That ] -- Sloan. You know, the only reason Sloan isn't taking up all of the top 20 spots is because I've got so many Sloan songs loaded on there. Because my iPod loves it some Sloan. As well it should.
And now to bed. [ETA: Links (mostly) fixed!]
