Poor sewing machine, poor sewer

I decided, as a reward for tidying up somewhat and actually sending some stuff to the charity shop, I'd dig out my sewing machine and make myself a new skirt. I haven't actually sewn on the machine since (I think) making the Balrog gown nearly three years ago. A machine that's been in its case for three years needs a good clean; then she gave me a lot of tension trouble. Then I realised the bobbin I was using was for my mother's machine, so it all needed re-adjusting with the proper bobbin tension. I finally got her running approximately at least, although I think a proper service may be in order as a Christmas present for the both of us.

Anyway, I cut the cloth for a rather frivolous, tiered and flounced object, and started running up gathers for the first tier, only to find I could only find half-a-dozen pins. Trying to control 6' of gathers into a waistband with a handful of pins is well-nigh impossible, as I spent a good hour establishing. I think this is a sign to go to bed.
