cake
everyone, everyone, tomorrow is my birthday, but tonight was my party with the kid. we had a very fine party, with cake and ice cream and a dance party with bellydance hip scarves (there has to be a better name for those - when i bought them, the dude said "we call these shakiras"). my mom called to say sorry she forgot my birthday was coming up, she was too busy being on a week-long whitewater rafting trip with a bunch of friends. how could i hold a grudge after that? also, she just heard through the grapevine that my brother's horrid ex-girlfriend is pregnant with somebody else's baby, and we had a marvelous cackle.
this picture captures the precarious (and age-inaccurate) candle situation as well as the Ugliest Candlestick in the World, which i bought in an alley in Cuzco a couple years ago. its mouth is full of some weird crust. it scares children. it is precious to me. the cake was sort of gross. but it was still cake, and i drank a whole bunch of wine too. birthdaaaye!
my kid told me that her hope for me in the upcoming year is that i get "like a hundred more forks. and that fairies land in your hair."
