Oof. Man, making me put my jumbled thoughts into words...

To give some perspective on my view, here's some background. I was raised Roman Catholic and was forced to go to church. I say forced since I never really liked going and would always try to sleep through it. I would always try to skip Sunday school too. Something about it never sat quite right with me (which I will address later). Then my best friend died. I was 7. It was at that point that I decided that everything everyone at church was telling me was a lie and they were just trying to comfort themselves.

I honestly believe that some people need a religion. They need it to help them cope with death and the unknown. But I also feel as if those who do nothing but attribute everything to god(s) (yes, lower case, since this is ALL religions), are deluding themselves and really don't believe what they hear or say they believe.

I like the idea of religion as an idea and general guideline on how to be a decent person. If you have to be scared into it by believing you'll go to hell if you don't act accordingly, then so be it. I don't like the idea of people using religion as a way to bully others, as it is often used. Christianity is the major abuser of this right now, but again, this applies across the board.

As for Christianity specifically, again, as a general idea and philosophy, fine; but as it is commonly used (must convert! I am right, you are wrong!), I think it's a load of shit. I also don't like how they treat women and how some sections brainwash their followers, but that's politics for you.

I personally am atheist who believes that nature is amazing just as it is, without a need to ascribe it to some "higher power." I try to be sympathetic to people and treat them nicely because that's the right thing to do, not because I'm afraid I'll be tortured for all eternity. I also believe that all the religions are myths - granted, they are all very interesting and fascinating myths, but they are myths, used to exercise control on societies. I believe that people who believe that the bible is the word of god are full of shit and need to pull their heads out of their asses. The bible is the word of man, but is man's attempt to understand what the fuck is going on in the world. I also believe that religion, in it's current state, retards science and other breakthroughs that could alleviate the suffering of many.

Unfortunately, a great number of practicing Christians are hypocritical assholes who need to shut up and open their eyes, ears and minds and learn to think critically and not blindly accept everything that one person tells you.

Sorry for the rambling and incoherency. It's a tough subject to parse for me and I'll jump all over the place trying to touch upon each little thing.

Good luck with your research and hopefully I'll get to see you more often!
