As promised, THE UPDATE (lj version)

Jan 11, 2010 16:16

For those of you that are on both by FB and here, I won't tag you in the FB version because you'll get the same experience here.

So. The move to AL. Tuscaloosa, or T'town as its often referred to here. The move itself was fairly uneventful. We had a blizzard coming out of NH, then decent weather once we reached CT. Thank god for that, since we still had to move the table from Uncle John's. That wasn't so bad.
We stopped off at exit 17 (I-84) to grab some food....and then I fucked up. I accidentally pulled into an area that wasnt big enough for our truck to turn around, nor did the lot wrap around the building. So after about an hour of struggling with the car, the trailer, the truck, and other people at the office building, we were able to situate ourselves to easily pull out after we got our meals. Nabbed the best sandwches in Southern CT that I can think of.
The rest of the afternoon and evening passed without much exciting going on. Cuz you know, driving on the interstate in the dark just screams shennanigans. ;-)
We stopped off at a Budget Inn, which was one of the worst decisions we made during the trip. The bed was hard, the room smelled like smoke (a non-smoking room, obviously), the door didnt fit its frame and the heater wasnt programmable. The shower was frigid at its best, and it too had a sucky driveway. We ended up clipping a snow bank which ripped the Fit from its holder. We didn't know that at the time so when we got out of the truck....the car was missing. Luckily it was only in the front lot; but I'm sure you can imagine the scare we had at 2 in the morning.
After a bumpy start in the morning, we were on the road again for about another 12 hours. We landed in McAlla, AL at roughly 9pm. The Hoffman sisters and their mom, Kelly, were nice enough to welcome Omi and I into their home for the night- Uncle John and Cassie being awesome enough to set that connection well ahead of time. So that night we arrived, muddled and disshevled. We were able to shower (in hot water!) and grab some food the next morning before completing our trip in Tuscaloosa. Lindse got together a group of her friends to help Omi and I into apartment (especially with that totally LEGEND desk of mine) which was really nice- especially since the sisters were unable to help us move into our apartments themselves.
Things are going very well here. I'll probably post pictures of the new apt on fb for all to see.
School is crazy. Being the new guy is never easy, but being the new guy when everyone is mid-flow is even worse. Little direction, no orientation or familiarization with anything about the school....its taking a lot of extra work on my part to grind that out. Its healthy though.

A professor is already bugging me to be in his group, which is odd but still cool. He had said that if I joined his group that he could probably put me on Research money as opposed to my Teaching stipend, which would rock socks. My first inorganic class resembled something out of Cullinane's Number Theory, which worries me because nothing like that ever came up in Inorganic at KSC. Books are a terrible expense, especially since I'd already been having money troubles on my own.
With that, day two comes tomorrow. We'll have to see how that goes.
