I took my custom dance sneakers back to Hersey yesterday to address the fact that the orthotics don't sit in them properly. Well, no wonder. Steve (the owner) said that it's quite clear he somehow made them a half-size too long. He re-measured my feet and said that he should be able to turn out a new pair for me in 3-4 weeks. I'm going to go in once I get back from OH so that he can compare the new lasts to the orthotics before he makes the shoes to be sure that they'll fit this time.
On the up side, he said that I'm welcome to keep the ones he's already made, because otherwise he'll just have to throw them away. I said yes! Per our discussion, he's going to put regular soles on them (for free). While I won't be able to wear my regular orthotics in them, I'm betting that I'll be able to put some padding together where it's needed so that I'll be able to walk in them comfortably, etc. They were wonderfully comfortable but for the fact that the orthotics just slipped forward and backward too much while I was dancing. If I just pad the insides where needed, they should work quite well. We'll see, but if nothing else, I'm totally willing to experiment on a pair of shoes that's just become free.
So yay, two pair of custom shoes for the price of one!
