Can mochi actually be flavoured? I thought they were rice cakes, rather like the Japanese equivalent of Indian idlis. Shaped and coloured, I can see, but flavoured, especially with something sweet? Or am I completely mistaken? *is bewildered*

In any case, I totally missed the significance of the grapes! I was all caught up in the colour, instead of the Ponta reference. :D

You can get flavoured mochi, although the traditional flavours (aside from the usual red bean paste, anyway) are fairly subtle - sakura, and I know I've seen green tea mochi somewhere. I had a link with really pretty pictures, but I can't find it. The grape thing... wouldn't work with filling, I don't think, but it's not entirely beyond the realms of possibility considering I was making it up. ^^;
