East of Eden

I was in a field next to a tree
I picked the knowledge it gave free
And when I had consumed it changed me
But I had not lost innocence
On something that's so innocent
It's not the knowing that jaded me
'Cause I know

When I saw myself then I still was whole
But when I look now I can see the hole
It wasn't something that happened all at once
But then one day I
Woke up
And I felt the difference
Like looking at old pictures
Next to your reflection
I didn't feel my aging
But I can see the changes
It was something else
That I couldn't seem to
Find inside

I felt the edges of my soul
Where I had given what once was whole
And the gaping holes that now abound
Some of which I had given up
To drugs, and fucks, and growing much
Farther apart from where I was
And it shows

'Cause everything's a bit more complicated
It's a complex emotion that makes me jaded
It wasn't something that happened all at once
But then one day I
Woke up
And I felt the difference
Like looking at old pictures
Next to your reflection
I didn't feel my aging
But I can see the changes
It was something else
That I couldn't seem to
Find inside

It can't be ignorance
It can't be ignorance
It can't be ignorance
Because it's from the heart
And not from lack of thinking
It can't be understood
Until you've felt the feeling
And you've tasted the blood
That you keep on bleeding out
Adam wasn't jaded
Because of what he tasted
He lost his innocence
Because of what he wasted
It wasn't what he learned
It was everything that he lost
It was something else
He couldn't seem to
Find inside
