Name: Cilan
Age: 20
Hometown/Region: Striaton City, Unova
Class: Gym Leader (Shares this title with Cress and Chili. He also is kind of a waiter. Kind of.)
Team:
Pansage (♂) - Pokemon received as a gift from his parents. He is one of Cilan's most trusted allies.
Stoutland (♂) - His parents' Herdiers had Lillipups.
Whimsicott (♀) - Caught in the Pinwheel Forest as a Cottonee.
History:
(Approved by our wonderful, sweet Cress-mun and Chili-mun! Thanks, you two! ♥)
Cilan was the eldest born of triplets, and lived in the Unova town of Striaton City. His parents did as much as they could to love and support their sons. However, raising three growing boys at once is not an easy feat. Because of this, their parents often were swept away with work. This left the three of them to grow very close together and learn about the world through their own observations. Despite being the first born, it didn't matter much to Cilan. He felt they all looked after each other in at least one way or another. Cress and Chili, his triplet brothers, became his best playmates and his best friends. Sort of. As a result of working parents, Cilan occasionally took on some more mundane responsibilities as he grew older, like volunteering to cook. Other than that, their times as children were fairly average. (After all, their parents WERE still there for them and educated them!)
The strong relationship the brothers had remained as they grew older, and it inspired them to work together as a team. When positions opened at a local cafe, it was decided that all three of them would apply for the job. Working as a waiter proved to be something Cilan enjoyed. Usually a quiet and shy boy, it really had to mean a lot for him to open up a little and keep the job. The fact he could contribute income made him feel useful, and it was apparent this was something meant for him. (In addition to cooking, which became a hobby and skill for him.) He enjoyed trying to take on the proper mannerisms for a waiter, even if he did get a little nervous. Luckily, having Chili and Cress (er, mostly Cress) by his side also encouraged him to work on his people skills.
Prior to this moment in time, Cilan had no experience with Pokemon. (Save for his parents' Herdiers.) One day, the boys' parents rewarded all their hard work with three eggs, one egg for each triplet. Much to Cilan's surprise, his egg hatched into a Pansage, while Chili got Pansear and Cress got a Panpour. Pansage would soon become his new companion, and also his friend. He began training Pansage along with his brothers and their Pokemon. They even began taking their Pokemon to the cafe.
Then fateful one day, Cress and Chili got into a big argument at work. Instead of their usual verbal banter, the two decided to settle things with a Pokemon battle, of all things, in the middle of the cafe! There was little Cilan could do to stop his brothers and feared for their jobs. ...However, the match proved to entertain customers and ultimately saved the brothers from being fired. In fact, there were requests for more battles. Cilan soon joined Cress and Chili in their Pokemon matches at the cafe. Eventually, their coworkers started to bring their Pokemon and the cafe's popularity skyrocketed. It became a great place to dine and battle.
Word of the cafe spread throughout all of Unova, and caught the interest of the Pokemon League. There was an open position for a gym leader, and the spot was offered to the triplets. Cilan, while incredibly excited, felt he was unworthy of the title and felt Cress or Chili deserved it. That's when an idea hit them: they requested that all three of them be the gym leader. The League accepted the idea, and the cafe turned into their Pokemon Gym. (It was still a cafe of course.) They decided to specialize in grass, water and fire. They challenged trainers based on what their starter Pokemon was. Being a Gym Leader meant having a LOT of responsibility, and Cilan decided he didn't want the title to go to his head.
Things did not change too much, especially for Cilan, as they continued to serve and challenge customers. However, it seemed that they were still novice trainers and even Cilan was aware of it. They typically won their battles, but the trainers from Nuvema had soon defeated them and rightfully earned their badges. Because it was their job, Cilan tried to not take the loss too personally. He simply continued to train his Pokemon in hopes of improvement. (Despite this, he refused to evolve Pansage. Pansage may have been small and cutesy, but the Pokemon's persistence always motivated him.
While Team Plasma stirred up drama throughout Unova, they had little interference with Striaton City. This left the Gym Leaders somewhat out of the loop. By the time the showdown with Team Plasma hit its climax, it was already too late for Cilan and his brothers to join in on the Gym Leader showdown. This disappointed Cilan, because he really was willing to help when he heard the news from Bianca.
Cilan had always stayed relatively close to his home and his family. Unova is such a big region, so he sometimes visited neighboring cities and routes to train his team. He spent plenty of that free time in the Pinwheel forest because his love for Grass Pokemon. Overtime, he added a Cottonee to his team. He recently evolved her with a sun stone.
Despite leaving Striaton every now and then, Cilan has had doubts about leaving Unova that are still present to this very day. Maybe one day he'll venture out and see what grass Pokemon await him. He's been considering triple battles with Chili and Cress lately.
Personality:
As the oldest of the Striaton triplets, Cilan is ironically the quietest and least confident of them. While Cress and Chili have no qualms with boasting, Cilan merely does the best he can as a Gym Leader and as a trainer. He is completely aware of his position as a novice Gym Leader and remains modest. The hesitance in his speech reflects his uncertainty, in addition to his inability to coordinate as well as his brothers. Needless to say, he can come off as a little shy and meek, but not as much as his child self. He is prone to stammer and trip up on what he wants to say, especially when he's presenting himself and facing challengers. He may twiddle his thumbs idly when not busy or take on other small habits to show he is feeling slightly antsy and unsure of himself. His usual posture and gestures also indicate he is respectful, but humble.
However, this does not mean he's a complete pushover. He is not a doormat by any stretch of the imagination. If the time really calls for it, Cilan will give his two cents and speak up for himself. He only wishes to get along with everyone and avoid pointless arguments. Because of this, he's usually the one to try and break up fights between Chili and Cress. Despite being so agreeable, he still feels it is somewhat of a responsibility as the eldest.
He sincerely loves and values his brothers, seeing them as his best friends along with his Pokemon. (But seriously, Chili can exhaust Cilan, but he tries to be shrug it off.) He is very friendly and kind, despite his apparent shyness. He has a strong bond with all of his team and is slightly interested in the bond between humans and their Pokemon. (Unlike his anime counterpart, he is not a Pokémon Connoisseur. He simply cares about Pokemon. Anime concepts being in gameverse is silly! He's not even his animeverse self!) So once Cilan opens up a little more to a friend, he is very hospitable, considerate and patient. He is never antagonizing or condescending towards his friends and would like to help them in any way he can.
That isn't to say he's perfect, far from it actually. His meekness and problems getting "with the program," so to speak, make him more likely to freeze and worry when something serious comes up. He can also be cowardly in some situations and may begin to doubt himself. Heck, even Chili and Cress' fighting can take a toll on him, so he's not always shy smiles and sunshine. But in the end, he means well and does the best he can to overcome troubles and flaws for those who mean the most to him.
His shabby coordination and nervousness aside, he is not a terrible waiter. He's pretty good at it, actually. It's one of those certain things he can dedicate himself to. Despite this, he feels like he does better in the kitchen and loves to cook. He's always trying to cook new things, as well as serve meals for his siblings.
Sample I: You are dead last on the Trainer Rankings list.
[Cilan's disheartened face shows up on the PCD screen. He doesn't look particularly depressed or angry, but his look matches that of a severely disappointed child on Christmas.]
Oh... um, I got last place on the Pokemon Rankings list. I wonder what I did wrong. This isn't acceptable for a Gym Leader, even a novice one... Er, I guess I haven't improved as much as I thought. I promise to improve my act, so to speak. I must become a better trainer for my team. Me and my Pokemon are just going to try harder today. Cress, Chili, if you're watching this, um, I'm sorry for letting you down so bad.
[He quietly sighs.]
Maybe we could take turns having a match later? I'll make tea and snacks.
Sample II: YOUNGSTER JOEY wants to battle!
"...And I'm Cilan. I like Grass Pokemon the best. Well, we're here because, I mean, we're the-"
"My Patrat and I are ready anytime you are!" interrupted the rather enthusiastic young boy. "He's in the top percentage, and we're going to win!" Despite not owning a standard starter Pokemon, Youngster Joey was still determined to face one of the Striaton Gym Leaders and claim victory. Somewhat baffled, Cilan's eyesight shifted between his brothers. To put it lightly, it seemed unusual for a boy like Joey to make it that far. However, it was impossible to turn down the match, nor did anyone want to. It was only fair, after all. Cilan wasn't the type to treat customers like that. Judging from the lack of response from his brothers, Cilan could only assume he would be the one to face Joey. Blinking twice and facing forward, he pretended to not be curious.
"Alright then," said the confused Gym Leader, "No hard feelings... but I'll do my best as your opponent. I hope your Pokemon are ready to face, um, my Pokemon." Not meaning to stall, he briefly considered which Pokemon to bring out while waiting for the challenger's reply.
Joey unleashed a confident grin upon Cilan, "I know I'm ready! Patrat is too! So enough stalling, I'm ready for that badge!"
"Right," Cilan nodded. "My grass Pokemon are ready too... I guess we'll see who wins. Good luck..." He approached Joey with a Pokeball in hand. It was just another day at the Striaton Gym.
