I really enjoyed this episode. The following is almost entirely Bonnie and Caroline stuff.
Bonnie is back! This pleases me. The show has semi-justified her long absence (FOUR EPISODES) by having her come back a little different. Harsher. She's upset that the vampires are out of the tomb and her grandmother died for nothing. And she - rather reasonably - blames Stefan and Damon. But she doesn't want to make Elena chose between herself and Stefan, so she's keeping her distance until she's gotten her feelings straightened out. I'm also looking forward to her becoming the powerhouse of the show.
I love that Bonnie and Caroline talked to each other daily while she was away - and the startled look on Elena's face. It was actually kind of subtle. Bonnie was conflicted regarding Elena and Stefan before she found out the vampires escaped - that just made it worse.
But I wanted to talk about Bonnie and Caroline's friendship. I love it. Caroline makes Bonnie smile. Caroline talks about her insecurities regarding Elena, and Bonnie gets it. Bonnie points out Caroline's lack of sensitivity, with neither of them taking offence. They're just good for each other.
Caroline mentioned that she feels like Elena's backup-Bonnie; does she feel like a backup-Elena to Bonnie? ...I don't really have an answer to that, but I sometimes wonder.
Caroline's relationship with her mother, or the lack thereof, is actually a little sad. Her grandmother and both her aunts won "Miss Mystic Falls", but her mother "lacked the gene" - the pretty gene? the charming gene? or the winning gene? I wouldn't be surprised if the aunts and grandmother brought that up every once in a while, just to show their superiority. Caroline needs the approval, not just to beat Elena. (But would Sheriff Forbes even be impressed with Caroline winning that kind of contest?) The scene where Jenna was helping Elena with her hair, and then we pan to Caroline getting ready by herself. Maybe that's part of Caroline and Bonnie's connection - the lack of closeness to their mothers. (Bonnie lives with her dad.)
But Caroline still stopped Elena from dropping out of the competition at the last minute. Elena joined for her mother, and she has to finish - it's important. Even if Elena is the only real competition.
Given how much Caroline participates in the community, she really deserved to win Miss Mystic Falls more than Elena did. Not only is she head cheerleader, with all the leadership responsibilities that entails, but she volunteers with the soup kitchen, ran a go-green campaign at the school, and whatever else she said. Even if the contest wasn't largely limited to members of founding families, she still should have been at least close to winning. I love that she has layers - she's not just this shallow, blonde cheerleader. I wish her luck in becoming a broadcast journalist, or whatever else she might decide to be.
