BtVS Film Relaunch
Damn you Star Trek for being such an awesome movie and having enormous box office success. Damn you!!
This is weird though. I think they only have complete rights to the original movie - they were credited as producers on both the BtVS and Angel tv series, but had no creative input. But what made BtVS so great wasn't just the concept of a blond cheerleader type kicking ass or the witty dialogue - it was the story arcs, the character development, the little absurdities present in even the most serious plots.
The original movie was actually rather fun, in a campy kind of way. But... it was just a movie. Not even a cult movie. The mythology was small, and different from the series mythology. Buffy as a character was different. The other tv show characters weren't even created yet. Even relaunching it as "darker and edgier" than the original movie doesn't seem like it would draw in the tv show crowd that much - Joss Whedon isn't involved at all, and it won't feature any tv show characters besides Buffy.
This is just so obviously a grab for money.
