šLand Brandenburg.
[name;] Dietrich
[country;] Bundesrepublik Deutschland (Germany)
[state age;] over 2,000 (at least)
[human age;] 24
[hair color;] black
[eye color;] green
[height;] 5’4” (163 cm)
[weight;] 140 lb
[personality;] A German state with a long, proud history, it’s not particularly surprising that Dietrich tends to take after Prussia - after all, before Prussia became a kingdom, it was known as Brandenburg-Prussia, and it was Brandenburg’s royal family that became the Kingdom of Prussia’s royal family. He is proud, self-confident, arrogant, cocky, and every synonym in-between. If given any chance whatsoever, he will immediately launch into a monologue detailing every single one of his conquests in immense detail. Also unsurprisingly, he has a foul mouth and colorful vocabulary. Whatever he lacks in eloquence, he makes up for in sheer volume.
When it comes to Prussia, though, he has a bit of an inferiority complex. He doesn’t like that he wasn’t as recognized as Prussia, despite being an important part of it, but has immense respect for the former kingdom and empire. He would also defer to Germany as well, but doesn’t respect him nearly as much as he respects Prussia.
He can get frustrated and angry very easily, but his temper wanes as quickly as it waxes. When he does get angry, he often goes on extremely profane rants and threatens to kill people, but he basically never carries through with his threats. He also sometimes forgets about his grudges completely, and it’s not uncommon for him to greet someone cheerfully after having insulting them quite violently just the day before and insisted that he’d kill them.
To some extent, he comes off as a person who is too brash to really be smart, but he has the same sort of logical, tactical mind that Prussia and Germany has. He lacks in book smarts because he just doesn’t really like studying, but when he applies himself he can pick stuff up pretty quickly. The only problem is that he truly abhors studying with a passion and avoids it as much as possible.
Also? The World Wars never happened. Oh, neither did East Germany. Those are kind of sore spots for him and his pride. Mentioning any of these are a surefire way to piss him off, and he’ll likely remember it for some time. Don’t even mention it in a joke.
[miscellaneous info;]
X He rather dislikes Russia, as it was the Soviet Union that made East Germany a miserable, miserable place to live in.
X Dietrich has an Iron Cross, but he doesn’t wear it except with military apparel. Still, he carries it somewhere on him.
X Brandenburg was the site of two concentration camps, Ravensbrück (an infamous women’s camp) and Sachsenhausen, both of which he does not like talking about.
X Potsdam is his capital, a famous German city in its own right. The Prussian kings used to live there until 1918. It has many historical sites, and is also the site of the Potsdam Conference. Potsdam is one of the science centers of Germany, so sometimes Dietrich says stuff that’s really scientific without really realizing it.
X He enjoys watching movies a lot, as he has Babelsberg, one of Europe’s leading film producers.
X His English is really, really good, as he has over 280 foreign companies operationg within Brandenburg, including the German eBay.
X Unsurprisingly, his most famous foods are various potato dishes. In fact, his most famous noodle dish… is a potato dish, not noodles at all. He also produces wine and beer. On that note, he has extremely high alcohol tolerance and could out-drink most people without getting more than just a little tipsy.
X He’s a little nicer to women than he is to men, but he’s not above calling a woman ‘bitch’ if he’s really pissed. ‘Whore’, though, is out. He doesn’t say stuff like that to women.
X Brandenburg is a very historical state in Germany, with many castles and the such preserved. Dietrich himself is pretty modernized, but he channels this history through an overbearing pride in ‘the old days’.
X He is the site of a famous classical music festival. While he doesn’t play an instrument himself, he does enjoy listening to a little music occasional. German composers, of course, are the best.
X Brandenburg is famous for its well-preserved environment. This is reflected in his slight obsession with personal hygiene. IE, it bothers him when people don’t brush at least twice a day, take a shower/bath at least once, wash their hands, and so on.
X He needs glasses to read, but he hates wearing them. He’ll try to avoid using them as much as possible, but he still finds himself wearing them at least once a week or so.
X He’s a Protestant. He isn’t very diligent about it, though.
X Besides being fluent in German and English, he also knows some Sorbian.
X He has no last name a la Germany-style. (Rather, I just didn’t want to pick one.)
X Brandenburg consists of everything surrounding Berlin, but not Berlin itself. As a result, he is a little overprotective of Berlin. At the same time, he really doesn’t want to reunite with Berlin and doesn’t even necessarily like Berlin all that much.
X Streusandbüchse was his nickname during his earlier years, as the sandbox of the Holy Roman Empire. If you want to tease him, call him something along those lines.
X He’s short and kind of has a Napoleon complex going for him.
X Being quite a bit older than most, he still retains knowledge of how to use a sword. While he’s skilled with current-day firearms, he’s still best with swords, and will gladly skewer anybody who’s foolish enough to try and go against him.
[history;] (to be expanded on quite a bit)
Brandenburg first emerged as one of the margraviates of the Holy Roman Empire. Although it was known as the “sandbox” of the Holy Roman Empire - as it contained a lot of nothing at the time - it became one of the electorates of the HRE after its margraves were established as prince-electors, making it more powerful than ordinary margraviates.
It was a prosperous area during the sixteenth century. During that time, the ruling family that owned Brandenburg, the Hohenzollerns, took control of the Duchy of Prussia, Duchy of Cleves, the Rhineland, and parts of Westphalia, to form the country of Brandenburg-Prussia in 1618. If you’ve seen a map of Prussia at the time, it was a very disconnected country, and did very poorly during the Thirty Years’ War.
However, Brandenburg’s rulers proved to be talented and helped expand its territory. Starting with the Duke Elector, Frederick Wilhelm, Brandenburg-Prussia was rebuilt and consolidated. After victory over the Austrian Hapsburgs in the Silesian Wars, Prussia became a kingdom. Brandenburg was the central core of the kingdom. Prussia enjoyed prosperity for some time. When Prussia began the unification of Germany, Brandenburg became part of united Germany, participating in both World Wars.
After WWII, Germany was partitioned, and Brandenburg became part of East Germany, split apart into several districts. The best way to describe East Germany is something like this: It sucked. It really, really sucked. During that time, Dietrich really threw himself into the fine arts to distract himself from things, especially music (jazz, in particular), theatre, and movies.
When Germany was reunified, the current-day State of Brandenburg was re-established. Although it has gone through hard times, Brandenburg has modernized and is improving.
