"Aww, I'm blushing. You're way too nice. You're exaggerating!"
Yeah, NO. I hate that so much. I hate fake modesty and I hate how it's inserted into everyday life.
"Oh, you got such a good mark on your test!"
"Oh, wait, this? It's so low, I wish I'd done better."
Dude, if you don't mean it, don't say it. Honestly. Also, if you compliment someone and expect a compliment back, you're pretty much fishing for compliments. Compliments are word gifts, little sayings and thoughts that brighten your day just that much more. If you use them when you don't really mean them, the ones you get seem cheap and fake too. So, don't bother.
There's also a difference between compliments and put-downs. Even though that seems blatantly obvious, because of today's daily sarcasm and condescension, it isn't. Don't ever just take something that actually hurts. If you do, eventually you'll get used to it. You shouldn't have to get used to it.
Due to modern misuse of nice words and compliments, they're worth about as much as the common 'thank you'. That means they're thoughtless and almost meaningless. So think about what you're saying and ask yourself if you really mean whatever you say. Then maybe today's youth won't be so misunderstood.
