WHAT: A multi-purpose trip to visit my aunt and two cousins while accompanying them on a road trip.
WHERE: Raleigh, North Carolina; Atlanta, Savannah, and Charlottetown, Georgia; and Jacksonville, Orlando, and the coast of Florida.
WHEN: Friday, August 4th - Tuesday, August 15th
At the moment, I'm a little tired from my aunt's and my long talk last night, but I have a warm, fluffy black poodle named Happy in my lap and he's cuddling quite nicely. Besides, the talk was a much-needed catch up time and my aunt's insight into life is frank and refreshing. Here's a little bio: She is a successful business woman, a well-read intellectual, a loving mom, and whatwith getting married at 31, she's had plenty of time to travel the world and become quite cultured. Besides all that, though, she has an excellent sense of humor, is way too much fun, and easy to talk to. For those keeping score at home, she is my dad's sister.
So the whole family here consists of three: Aunt Ronda (47), Bryce (12), and Taryn (8). Not to mention Happy the dog and Onyx the cat. It's a pleasant group.
My favorite moment with Bryce thus far has been when he payed for a magazine at BestBuy, (with his own money) and tried to tip the checker lady. "Do you take tips?" he asked in a very well-to-do, adult sort of way. The lady chuckled and thanked him although she wasn't allowed to accept his "generous offer."
Taryn and I have been sharing a bedroom and two nights ago, as we were laying in bed, she told me she wasn't tired. She then proceeded to whisper secretively, "I have some tricks for falling asleep." The list is as follows:
1. Get in a really cozy position and stare at one spot for about 5 minutes or as long as you can stand.
2. Try and close your eyes for as long as possible.
And there you have it.
We leave tonight on our road trip. Aunt Ronda and I will be trading for the driving position and listening to Iron & Wine, Waking Ashland, and "A Tale of Two Cities" on cd. (among other things)
Wish us luck!
