since my sister's getting married, we started going to bridal shops to look at gowns. she's also tried on a few. talking about the dresses with the in-house designer is bittersweet. i swell with pride when the designer says, "you're good! you should come work for me!" it's exciting to discuss things like empire cut versus the six-panel circle cut, and the stiff but very elegant duchess satin, and how i told her not to use tulle for the ruched bodice of my sister's gown because tulle looks cheap and it's too unforgiving to bring out the soft detail of ruching anyways (she suggested organza, but chiffon is better cos organza is rough and has that very tacky iridescent sheen). but then after that i always think about what would've happened if i had taken up that job to bead bridal gowns in Orchard Road.

i think deep down i always knew that yes, i am good enough to work as a designer in the local bridal industry, but i can't do it knowing that i'm no Marchesa or Elie Saab.
