1) I've watched the other (modern) Whos but for me, I only got into it for the Tennant and Tate factor. Every other pairing makes it too much of a kids show for me. But *they* took it somewhere else, somewhere that could appeal to both the child in me and the adult. They were fascinating together. I saw the big revelation though about Amy and her...relation. (And can I just say, I TOTALLY CALLED IT. Well, no, I didn't but I wrote something every similar years ago in a fic only it was Donna and River who were related. Just saying.)
2) Raquel Cassidy! YES! Have you seen "Teachers"? If you haven't, you MUST!! I totally shipped Susan and Simon for a brief but intense period before...no, I won't tell you, you have to watch. She's great though, it's great when she gets roles that match her brilliance, "Lead Balloon" does not but "Moving Wallpaper" does. Another MUST!
3) Everyone is going on about "Cougar Town" all of a sudden!! And I agree. It deserves all the praise it is getting and I think it's one of those shows that's audience is going to grow by sheer word-of-mouth and fan approval. It will become more and more popular, even after it ends.
4) I was so primed for "Downton Abbey" to be awesome and it's good but...I'm really not as into it as I thought I might get. I can't really get a handle on any of the characters, I think that's why. They are diverse and fascinating but there's none that I *love* or root for above all else. I'm not invested in anything that's happening. It's more like your there just to observe everything, which I find a cold way to tell a story.
1) I loved Nine/Rose too, for the same reason I love Ten/Donna - they really did become better people by being with each other. Okay, that could be argued for every Doctor/companion pairing but the emotional depth of Ten and Donna's relationship puts them on a whole other level.
Augh. I was halfway through series 5 when A Good Man Goes to War came out. I didn't even get the chance to speculate before I found out about the big reveal. Staying away from Doctor Who spoilers forever.
I don't know what I would have done if it turned out to be Donna/River instead. I'd love to read that fic if you don't mind sharing the link. :)
2) Yes, I just finished downloading series one and two of Teachers! I want to marathon it properly once I'm done with Breaking Bad but I can't resist taking a peek every now and then. I'm completely in love with what I've seen of Susan so far. I like the Simon/Susan dynamic but I'm still a little turned off by Simon's douchiness. Hopefully I'll find him more likable when I watch the show all the way through. That said, I'm impressed at Andrew Lincoln's transformation here. I've only ever seen him play good guys.
Downloaded Party Animals because I liked her interaction with Eleven and Matt Smith is in this show. Currently downloading Moving Wallpaper so it's good to know you enjoyed this.
3) I hope more people watch it. Every single character is so likable, it's amazing.
4) I'm not invested in anything that's happening. It's more like your there just to observe everything. Oh, see, I love this kind of storytelling (when done right). I may be a voyeur, haha. But yeah, if you can't find a character to root for in this show (or any show really), it'll be difficult to stick to it.
I found that David Tennant brought so much more humour to the role than Chistopher Eccleston. He didn't make it a must-see for me, though I did watch on and off. But there was always something about the revolving role of the females that bugged me about the show. I guess the modern version has done a better job of making that feasible though.
The only place I've published my Ten/Donna fic is at FF.net and the one I mention is the last I wrote, it's called "Impossible Things" (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5006545/1/Impossible_Things) though I hesitate to recommend it as I haven't read it in ages and don't know if I still approve of it. Let me know if it holds up....
As for Simon, he is basically a child. Sometimes he treats Susan like a mother. But there is the basis for a good romantic relationship within that dynamic, despite her freak when he tries it. Because there's intimacy there and honesty. And she gets that this is who he is. I never minded his idiocy too much, I just thought it was one of the funnest shows ever when I discovered it. I'm almost envious of you watching these shows for the first time because I have seen them over and over and still love them.
Enjoy "Moving Wallpaper" too. On that, I saw similarities between Jack and Liz in the couple I shipped, Jonathan and Sam. There's even one episode where the BOSS decides to sit in one the WRITERS during their creative process. Sound familiar???
I always forget Matt Smith is in "Party Animals", I should watch that thing properly one of these days...Are you enjoying it?
Oh, I agree, it is still worth a watch, that kind of storytelling, and "Downton" does it WELL as it does everything it does well. But I'm not GLUED to it, is all.
I found that David Tennant brought so much more humour to the role than Chistopher Eccleston. I agree, but I did adore Eccleston's goofiness and alien-ness, and how he played Nine's weariness/survivor's guilt. Tennant's Doctor is the most human I've seen so far, and I think that, among other things, is what made him so popular.
Yeah, I don't understand why it has always has to be girls either. But for the most part, I love the way the companions are written so I don't mind it too much.
For the record, Mindy, "Impossible Things" is one of the most beautiful Ten/Donna fics I've ever read. Your fics always make me emotional, I swear. My heart is like putty in your hands. And it is so weird that you mentioned Monte Carlo in your fic, because now Catherine's in a movie called Monte Carlo. Plus, you thought of River as a companion's descendant. You are a soothsayer, you are.
I do like their moments together and they definitely have chemistry. We'll see what happens. :) Really can't say much about the shows because I'm catching up on Breaking Bad right now. I'll probably watch Party Animals next week though. I'll let you know what I think of it.
Tennant is just CHARISMATIC wit a capital CH! He's just a born entertainer. He has such charm but also knows when to be real which is the basic job of any actor. s you say, to be human.
I like that they've mixed it up by adding some boys here and there but what I mean is that the show started in the sexist 70s or whatever and I used to watch it as a kid in the 80s and what bothered me about the original set-up later was the idea that women were interchanaglble or replaceable. One was as good as the next. Ek.
Oh thanku! I was never really that sure about that fic...but I'm glad it holds up well. Cos I found the Donna conclusion pretty unsatisfying and distressing. So mostly my writing was about bringing closure to that for myself. If it resonates with others, that's even better.
I am a Soothsayer. I walk around in red robes all day with weird patterns painted on my face. (But I do have a weird ability to tap into particular fandoms cos I've predicted so many things on "30 Rock", just little lines or whatever that I later saw and went: "I already wrote that!")
