WTF?
Here's a talented, good-looking kid, 28 years old, to all appearances King of the world. Residuals from A Knight's Tale, income from that Brokeback thingy, gotta be doing OK financially. Certainly better than I am. So money probably didn't cause his depression and insomnia.
Broke up with his girlfriend last year. OK, I know that when you're young every change in a relationship is life altering, and losing your girl seems like the end of the world. Rejection hurts. But I've been through that when I was young, and, more recently, split up with a wife of 22 years. Did I get depressed? Sure. Did I get medicated, and accidentally over-medicate? Nope. How about those thousands of other people who split up every year? Maybe, maybe not.
Can't sleep because the 'Joker' role he was playing in the new Batman is just too evil and scary for him to cope with. He should have had my two hour drive to work every morning and the two hour drive home every night - that's evil, and scary! Can I sleep at night? Like a log! Are other peoples' lives stressful? Sure. Do they cope? Mostly, I hope!
So why is it that some people cope, and other people fall into the self destructive, drugs, drink, party, lifestyle that seems to be embraced by the young celebrities of the world. Where are these peoples' support network? Where are their friends, their loving families, the kind of people who help you and me get through the hard times? Do they only have leeches, parasites, and predators around them? Do they not have people who care? Care enough to give them a wake-up slap, and make them pull themselves together?
Whether Heath Ledger accidentally ingested enough sleeping pills to kill himself, or whether he did it on purpose, his death is a tragedy. Even if there is some other cause of death - how the hell did this likeable young man, who had such tremendous talent and potential, die alone in an apartment in New York, to be found by the maid? What loneliness does celebrity bring to these kids?
Why does Heath Ledger's child have to grow up fatherless?
