How was Pennsic this year? It was really, really, really hot and humid the first week. Then, on Sunday we got a sprinkle of rain, but it didn't cool anything down (it drizzled all through the Greybeard Tournament I entered). Same again Monday, enough drizzle to make everything wet and drive the humidity even higher.
Finally on Tuesday, right in the middle of the Great Wall Battle, we got a downpour, including sturm und drang!! It rained so hard it was like being under a waterfall. lasted about two hours. Wednesday, the Field Battle went off without any rain, just drizzle all through it. That evening it rained hard for about three hours. Thursday it drizzled through the Woods Battle, and then pasted us for four hours. If anything it rained harder than it had on Tuesday. Friday it rained gently until about ten, then it cleared up, so that it could get hot and humid for the River Battle.
In the 12 years I've been going to Pennsic, this is the wettest I can remember. We still had 11,595 in attendance, and people mostly remained cheerful throughout.
So, how was the fighting? Glorious!!
I entered the Greybeard Tournament for the first time (Double Elimination Tourney for folk over the age of 50). All three of my fights were against chivalry. I lost to Sir Bran, defeated Sir Caladus, and lost to Sir Barak Hasdrubal. As they have all been playing much longer than I have, I feel no shame. I took the fight to them and made them work hard to beat me.
I also had the honour of leading the warriors of the Barony of Septentria into battle this war, and lead them I did. We were in the Great Wall Battle, the Field Battles, the Woods Battle, and the River Battle. In each scenario, our unit, consisting of 16 to 20 fighters did our duty, fought hard, in the right place and at the right time. These folk just simply make me proud. They are well trained, eager, capable, and intelligent, and they follow commands like professional soldiers. Leading troops like this simply makes a leader look good, no matter how bad a job he's doing!.
Septentria can be proud of her fighters, the Heart of the Ealdormerean army!
I came home with a cold, but I think I'll go back next year.
