The reason I raised the question is because this is a change from the past. When I was younger, people seemed to have a sixth sense about stuff like this, or they were just a lot more sneaky in how they gathered their intel...
If the gift cards are for stores that people do their regular shopping at, then I don't see a problem with giving gift cards. If you lose the gift card, sure that's a problem, but losing a wad of cash would be a problem too...
I've given my family a list of the places I normally shop, they should be all set. I normally don't let gift cards sit around too long because especially when it comes to clothes shopping, I've become a huge fan of the after-Christmas clearance sales. Wait a week or two into January and the prices on stuff will start dropping like a rock. That's when the stores break out the mad discounts...
