IC:
Character name: Penelo
Fandom: Final Fantasy XII
Timeline: Post original game
Age: 17
~*Magical*~ abilities and strengths: She is an adept user of magicks, white, black, and otherwise. But separated from her world, and therefore the Mist that naturally lent its power to magic, all her abilities suffer a bit. White magicks were always her specialty, so her ability to heal with magic remains fairly strong. Anything else, for example elemental attack spells, will have been reduced to their most basic level. Not that she would often have too much use for casting a fireball on board a spaceship, anyway.
In terms of physical abilities, she is not well suited to combat but neither is she a weakling. She has enough stamina to travel long distances by foot, and she can move swiftly when she wants to. She can also wield a dagger well enough, though she isn’t trained in fighting. In a direct confrontation, her best bet would be to run away.
Additionally, she is a very good dancer.
Appearance: Penelo is a delicate and slender girl, who stands at 5’3” and wears her blonde hair in pigtails. She carries herself gracefully and comes across as relatively mature, but there’s a childlike quality to her face, form, and demeanor that would cause most people to describe her appearance first and foremost as “cute.” Her clothing is slightly odd-looking, but practical enough, suited to both dancing and everyday wear and tear. Background/Personality: Penelo was born and raised in Rabanastre, the capital of Dalmasca. Growing up, she lived a happy life with her parents. They were never tremendously well-off, but her young life wasn’t especially difficult, either. When she was 12, a plague swept through her homeland. She and her parents were lucky enough to survive it, but her friend, Vaan, and his brother, Reks, lost their parents. Penelo’s parents took in the boys afterward. Three years, later, however, another tragedy struck, and a war raged that took the lives of both her parents and Vaan’s brother. The war resulted in the invading empire of Archadia taking over her homeland, leaving her city in a state of some unrest.
After that, she and Vaan made their way by working for a shopkeeper named Migelo. Penelo was always more serious about the work than Vaan was; he had some fantasy about being a sky pirate one day, and preferred to get by through more exciting means, like picking pockets. She kept a close eye on him, trying to keep him out of trouble, but he kept slipping past her protection one way or another.
At the beginning of the game, he snuck into the palace in Rabanastre, looking for treasure. He, along with the sky pirates Balthier and Fran who were after the same treasure, got caught and were taken to a dungeon. Penelo tried to tell the guards that Vaan hadn’t known what he was doing, but to no avail. As they were led away, Balthier left his handkerchief in her possession along with a promise that he would return Vaan safely.
From there, it was a matter of waiting and hoping for them to return, but unfortunately it was not so simple. A bounty hunter named Ba’Gamnan became aware of her potential connection with Balthier and decided to use her as a bargaining chip to collect the price on his head. He and his companions dragged her away to the mines in Bhujerba, and only set her free once they were certain Balthier was on his way.
By coincidence, her freedom did not lead her back to her companions, but put her temporarily in the care of Larsa Ferrinas Solidor, a prince of Archadia. Given her background, she had no love for the Archadian empire, and responded with fear when Larsa revealed that the consul in charge of Dalmasca, Vayne, was his brother. But Larsa proved himself to be kind and honest, even if the empire in general remained something she was unable to trust.
Eventually she was reunited with Vaan, who was still traveling with Balthier (whose handkerchief she returned) and Fran. The group had also expanded to include the former princess Ashe of Dalmasca and the disgraced knight, Basch. Ashe requested that Balthier take her in search of a treasure that would prove her legitimacy as a princess, Vaan chose to go along for the adventure, and Penelo because she wasn’t about to let Vaan out of her sight, not again.
That set off a series of events that got her and the rest of the group more caught up in world politics than she ever would have imagined not long before. After all, she never could have expected to even meet a Dalmascan princess and an Archadian prince, much less get to know them personally. She also saw much more of the world on this journey than she had ever seen before; prior to this, she had rarely been out of Rabanastre, and never very far. But rather than let herself be simply overwhelmed, she adapted to circumstances as they changed around her, and easily grew close to all her traveling companions.
After a while, a choice landed on Ashe--to either use Nethicite (a stone containing tremendous power, which the Archadian empire has already used for destruction) to take revenge on the empire, or to destroy that power once and for all. Penelo worried that she would choose the former; as much as Penelo was opposed to the empire, and as well as she knew what it felt like to have lost loved ones in that war, she would not wish for further destruction. Thankfully, Ashe chose not to use the power to exact revenge, and instead allowed the stone to be destroyed.
In the end, the group confronted Vayne directly, and emerged ultimately victorious. Balthier and Fran became separated from the group, leaving their airship in Vaan’s care until they would be able to get back to it. Vaan was able to realize his dream of becoming a sky pirate, and Penelo stayed with him. After spending such a long time in the company of sky pirates, and after getting used to more excitement than she ever would have asked for, she decided that being a sky pirate didn’t sound like too unappealing a prospect. Besides, Vaan would need someone to keep him out of trouble.
She never imagined that after all that, her planet would end up being destroyed. But she’s still alive, and Vaan is still with her, and those are the most important things.
Why should that character be in this game: N/A
Why do you want to continue their history here: I think if her world got destroyed, she would rather be on board here, especially if (as is the case) some of the people she cares about are here, too. As for how she’d fit in, the ship’s crew would probably be happy to have her around. She’s a good worker, and really wouldn’t mind doing those peeling potatoes kinds of jobs.
Plus, Vaan-mun asked. ;)
