either brace yourself for elimination . . .

Well, I have done it. Braced myself and changed the guards after sixteen years. Come the end of this month I'll be a-travellin' a very different road. Word would not come from the east and north, so I had to make my own way.

Really, it was time. Sixteen years should be enough for anyone. I think that life is going to take on a different tone for me, finally. It's a novel concept. Not running.

I am not going to run away any more. I am going to take on things that scare me; I am going to embrace change. I do not think I will ever get where I want to go without taking a lot of risks.

To stay put would be to shrivel up and die. Ironic, how Ben played that song for me, lost and hurting in Sligo, and now it has become my anthem:

"Sixteen years,
Sixteen banners united over the field
Where the good shepherd grieves.
Desperate men, desperate women divided,
Spreading their wings 'neath the falling leaves.
Fortune calls. . . .
Either brace yourself for elimination,
Or else your hearts must have the courage for the changing of the guards."
