Michael Phelps Making Sports History; Does America Care?

Michael Phelps hasn't just established himself as the world's best swimmer over the past week in Melbourne. With his current run of six gold medals in six events at the World Swimming Championships, he's become the world's most dominant athlete in any sport.

But there's something odd about all this: An American is winning gold medal after gold medal, and the American people hardly seem to care. I watch sports on TV all day, and I don't even know what channel the current swimming championships are on, or if they're available on American TV at all. I know I'm not alone.

Swimming is one of the many sports that America cares about exactly once every four years. That's a shame for Phelps, who still has two events remaining and could achieve the unprecedented feat of eight world titles. If he accomplishes that feat in a year and a half in Beijing, he'll be a superstar in this country. As it is, I think he'll be able to come home from Melbourne, go out in public, and not be bothered to sign many autographs.

He looks better with the cap and goggles on :|

I <3 Phelps not because of his body but because hes just an incredible swimmer! i wish i could meet him and get his autograph =)
