They have been waiting. It is not like them, but they have had to learn and change and evolve since coming here, and so they have adapted to the world around them. When they came here, things changed, their world changed, and they changed with this new life. They grew accustomed to it, they learned the ways of this new world, and for them, life was ( Read more... )

Barbara's yelling, "The hotel! Everyone get to the hotel." She's already there, escrima sticks in her hands, looking for someone to watch her back.

Plourr was minding her own business in the hotel lobby. It's where she tends to spend a hell of a lot of her time these days; she was once a mechanic, and she is good with machinery, and she is going to make this monitor work.

She glances up as the sky finally grows dark outside, and she gets up to flick on a lightswitch.

And that's when she hears the scream.

It's closer than it has ever been before, and the hair raises on the back of her neck as she very nearly claps her hands over her ears, and she freezes, listening (dimly recognizing that someone else is there and yelling), for a half second before she's spinning back toward the reception desk and the blaster that is sitting on top of it.

Barbara's at the front door, "We need to concentrate our forces!"

There are two of them that make for the hotel first. They run side by side, each with a loping gait, growling and hissing as they race for the door. They know what they want, and they know how to get it.

Mel happened to be on the hotel roof at the time. When they come - she doesn't think twice. She drops to the street with one agile leap and has her axe out immediately. The nearest one is kicked away sharply. The second - well, her axe is around by then.

"Hey, Mel." Barbara grins, "Glad you could make it."

"Wouldn't miss this for the world," Mel says, spinning to land another kick. "You need a hand up?"

There are more. Many more. This is their place, their home, their world.

They know it well.

Three burst in from one of the walls, closest to Plourr and Babs, two racing for the first target and one going for the second.

The two out front are dead now; Mel hits hard, and the axe...well, does what one expects. But just as Mel dropped from higher up, so does a Wretch, aiming for the young woman below, arms and legs and claws outstretched.

Plourr has about two standard seconds to react. She whirls, blaster in a two-handed grip, and pumps red laser bolts into the faster of the two shapes coming at her. The other one -- she'll start shooting at as soon as (if) this one drops. If it isn't on her by then.

Angela hasn't fired, just yet. She only has a limited supply of ammo. But she's there, one gun out, waiting for a target.

"Don't waste it," Mel says, when she has a chance. And it's hard to grab a chance when you're focused on death from above, switching the axe around to swing up.

"Head upstairs. Last resort."

"Hey, Angela," Barbara nods and tosses a small metal triangle at one of the things, aiming for the eye. "I think she's right. Save the ammo. If we need to make a break through a big group, we're going to need it."

The tiny girl nods, but the gun still doesn't move.

"We move together?"

The first of Plourr's two attackers goes down. But the other is on her in a flash, claws trying to tear into her skin and hopefully deep enough to do serious damage. The one that Babs aims at is quick; they've learned to dodge bullets, or at least try, and so the triangle misses wide when it leaps sideways, circling around before darting forwards again.

She batters at the thing, getting in one good punch before using her blaster to club it. The little bastard has its claws in her shoulder, and it may be small, but the things are sharp.

They are, but it's grip loosens a tad when she clubs it; it's a hard hit, and it slips, falls, and doesn't get up. Stunned, most likely.
