Some people might call it hiding. Cass prefers to think of it as being cautious ( Read more... )

Back home I might stay home for days at a time, but that's because I could get so much more done there. Here... Well, I don't have any tools to work with. I go looking for them. Not because I expect to find a working computer, but because I can't do nothing.

A couple of days living in a place not designed to help offset the disadvantages of having no legs means that Barbara's looking a bit rough. Tired, perhaps a bit disheveled, but still mostly in control.

The first thing she does when she rolls out of the building is look up and down the street. The second thing she does is check the roofs.

After going back to her usual post up on the roof, Cass watched Barbara for a few minutes before finally deciding that she should come forward. She had already met with Steph and Tim. No doubt they told her she was here.

I knew she was here somewhere, but it's still something of a shock to see Cassandra. I realize that I'm going to need a closer look at her if I'm going to be able to calculate whether she's a threat or an ally.

Barbara waves, it's tentative and somewhat unsure, which is rather out of character.

Cass waves back in the same manner as well.

She hesitates visibly for a second or two before finally doing the typical leap-off-the-building-and-use-objects-to-slow-your-descent and landing in a slightly crouched stance.

If she looks wary... well that's because she is.

She looks almost unsure of herself. It's not something I'm used to seeing from her. She's always been poised, confident. The silence stretches out between them.

"Hey."

"Hey," she said crossing her arms and kicking her toe in the ground.

"So. You're here."

Yep. Real conversationalist, isn't she?

"Yeah." She looks different than she did last time I saw her. Softer, less driven. She doesn't look like a killer. "You too, huh?"

"Talk to Tim?" Cass asked in a way that might be her way of trolling for information on how much she knows about Cass being here.

And also what might have happened between Cass and Shiva.

Shiva didn't talk about it, but I did pick up that Cassandra had broken her neck and left her for dead. Maybe. It's hard to say what was running through her head at the time.

"I did." Barbara takes a deep breath, settles her mind, and lets her voice shift slightly, "Tell me."

Cass sighs and in her usual stunted fashion updates Barbara on what happened since she dropped her off to locate Shiva.

"...broke her neck," Cass finished. "Then ended up here."

Barbara taps her chin thoughtfully, "Interesting. You wound up here prior to your taking over the League of Assassins. Before that incident with Tim." She sets that aside for the moment and turns to the important question:

"What were you trying to do with Shiva?"

Interesting isn't exactly how Cass would frame it.

"Needed to know. About her and me," Cass replied.

"Did knowing change anything?" It never has for me. Then again, that's never stopped me from trying to find out, either.

"Explains a lot," Cass replied awkwardly, "but I-"

She falters trying to find the words.

"I don't know."

She needs someone to talk to. I'll make time for it, but I've got to know one thing first. "And the broken neck? Were you trying to kill her?"

Cass gives Barbara a long look. If anyone knows about her "issues" with Shi- her mother. It should be here.

"It was Shiva," Cass said simply.

And yes. She was avoiding the question.
