[Character Name] Roronoa Zoro
[Canon] One Piece
[Point Taken from Canon] post-chapter 512 when Kuma sends him flying, and pre-524 when he lands on Kuraigana and Perona bandages him. Might plan to canon update him once the crew is back together in the manga.
[Age] 19
[Gender] male
[Sexual Orientation] There's no indication either way in canon. Can 'indifferent' be a sexual orientation? I wouldn't say he's asexual, just focused to the point of exclusion on other things; if the thought ever came into his head, though, I could see him being attracted to either men or women. So. Bi? :|a
[Eye Color] Black
[Hair Color] Green
[Height] 178 cm (5'10")
[Other] Zoro has a massive, badly-stitched scar cutting across his entire torso, from the edge of his left collarbone down to his right hipbone. He also has stitched scars on his shins just above his feet, from ankle to ankle, from when he started to try and cut his feet off.
[Clothing]
This is the outfit he wears most often, and
this is an example of what he looks like wearing his bandana during combat. He wears different shirts a lot of the time, though, from ordinary t-shirts to open-front deals such as
this. He always wears three gold earrings in his left ear, and almost always wears his green haramaki about his waist.
[Background]
Zoro's One Piece Wiki page [Personality]
Zoro is a young man who has always been defined by a very, very intense will and singular drive. Much like his captain, he's straightforward about who he is and his ambition in life. 'Roronoa Zoro, the man who will be the world's greatest swordsman'. To defeat the current World's Greatest, Dracule 'Hawkeyes' Mihawk, and take that title: Zoro has held this dream paramount since he was a child, primarily because of his past with Kuina, his dojo master's daughter. She was the reason he become a swordsman in the first place, his unbeatable goal, and his promise with her, that one of them would become the strongest swordsman in the world, has shaped his life since she died in an accidental fall the next day. (She and Zoro were around 12 and 10 years old, respectively, at the time.)
Since then, Zoro has carried her portion of their dream on his shoulders as well as his own, along with carrying Kuina's white sword, the Meitou: Wadou Ichimonji, which he added to his previous two-sword style and in remembrance created Santouryuu, three-sword-style. Memories of her often surface at critical moments in a fight, usually when he's near death, and push him forward.
In general, Zoro is serious, perceptive, highly dependable, and mature for his age when he's not being a moron. He's a person of straightforward likes and dislikes: he loves swords, sleep, booze, fighting, and simple foods. He often wears a joyful and ferocious smile when he's having fun in a fight, a fact which freaks a lot of people right out and is part of why he's quite good at being intimidating and scary as all fuck. If he's not training, he's usually to be found sprawled out snoring somewhere, or drinking, since he loves alcohol like Luffy loves meat. He never seems to get drunk, however, and the only person known to outdrink him is Nami. He appreciates forthrightness, honesty, courage, and people who stand up for their dreams and what they believe in, even if they may be his enemies. He dislikes sweet food, being manipulated, being woken up, pretention, people who break promises, disrespect, and disloyalty.
Zoro is a swordsman of honor who won't attack an enemy's back unless the situation is truly desperate, such as if his nakama are about to be killed, and he also considers scars on the back to be a swordsman's shame. He meditates regularly and loosely follows bushido, the samurai code, but is not himself a samurai.
He's also an atheist, arrogant, extremely blunt, quite rough and uncouth, and more or less disinclined to change his behavior to accommodate anyone around him. He's not unflappable, nor does he take himself seriously all the time-he is 19. He can be startled into emotional reactions, and retains a sense of wonder when encountering amazing things, though usually much more subdued than the rest of his nakama (save Robin). He doles out sarcastic and dry humor at times, but silly things and behavior can definitely strike his funny bone and he has just as much fun as the rest of his nakama at their wild parties, though he rarely if ever participates in the most severe silliness.
He has a habit of coming up with over-the-top and dangerous solutions to simple problems, like cutting off either his or Usopp's hand for Chopper to re-attach later when they're handcuffed together during an important fight. He also tends to respond in a hilariously overblown manner when poked in certain ways (ie about his green hair, his sense of direction, or to half the things Sanji says), or when his nakama are being complete idiots. However, his temper flares and is generally quick to die back down into calm; albeit thoroughly disgruntled calm. He's not really a person who tends to hold grudges by nature, even over serious matters. He's cautious and takes quite a long while to warm up to people he's suspicious of, and remains disapproving of enemies who show up again, but doesn't usually hold personal grudges.
Transgressions and forgiveness, however, are serious matters of principle for him, and he always holds people responsible for their own actions. An action-oriented person on the whole, he judges and assesses people based on what they do rather than what they are or anything else about them. As such, apologies go a long way with him, provided that actions indicate they're sincere.
Zoro is a protector by nature, but will not mollycoddle anybody, and is, in fact, far more likely to smack someone upside the head and demand that they rely on their own strength first. However, as more or less the first mate and certainly the second strongest person on the crew, he considers it his responsibility to safeguard the rest of his nakama when necessary, and is certainly willing to protect them with deadly force-as he can be quite ruthless and has no real qualms about killing-or by shielding them with his own life.
That position is actually a change from the start of the series. A loner disinclined to join a pirate crew, he initially refused to become Luffy's first nakama. When he finally agreed, he warned the rubber boy that it was only so long as Luffy did nothing to get in the way of Zoro's own goals, and that if he did so Zoro would kill Luffy himself. In the present time, Zoro has reversed on this so completely that he basically sacrificed his life and dream to save Luffy and the crew, stating that if he can't even protect his captain his own ambition is worthless. (Miraculously, he survived. :))
In return, he has utmost faith in his nakama, and especially in his captain. He backs up Luffy's decisions without hesitation, such as when he saves Smoker from drowning in Alabasta and waves it off afterwards, saying he didn't want to but it was 'captain's orders'. The rare exceptions to this are when, on occasion, people haven't been seeing the reality of a situation, in which case he speaks up vehemently to strike the heart of the matter. In general, he's a sort of rock-steady older-brother figure to much of the crew, although his relationships with each of his nakama are of course quite varied in nature.
Mental:
Zoro is a fairly intelligent young man, but not in a way that has anything to do with books. He's intuitive and has a good grasp of common sense, although at times in his absolute confidence it may seem like he has none. For example, he doesn't see anything wrong with going into stupidly dangerous situations because he's sure he can take care of himself, and his definition of what's 'possible' and 'impossible' would probably be considered insane by most people. However, he's perfectly capable of following complex explanations (although he might fall asleep in the middle if he's not interested) and also putting details together for himself, and so is usually quick to grasp an opponent's strategy. When they encountered an enemy who could copy other people's physical forms, Zoro was the one who set out the idea of tying white bandages over a black 'X' mark on their arms for a double-blind in case they were unsure of a crewmate's true identity. He's not really a strategy-oriented crewmate, on the whole, however.
On the other hand, he has an extremely poor sense of direction; this has become a running gag in the series. His pathway on Little Garden is completely random, in Alabasta he mistakes 'up' for 'north', and in Water 7 he tries multiple times to get back to where his nakama are staying to warn them that the Marines have arrived, only to keep winding up back at the same beach, for a few examples. He's also completely unaware of this fact, and usually assumes/claims that it's the rest of the crew that got lost, not him, or that there's something wrong with the island/town he's lost in.
Emotional:
Much like Luffy, Zoro is basically built out of self-confidence. Hesitation, doubt, and fear are things that don't usually cross his mind. Although prideful, he can disengage and walk away from things that don't matter. He's practical and not ruled by emotion; in situations that don't call for it he generally keeps his abundance of passion out of sight.
He definitely has a kind side that isn't immediately evident at first glance-in his first appearance in the series he was imprisoned in a Marine courtyard, where he'd agreed to be tied for a month with no food after the Marine Captain's son threatened a young girl and her mother. When the girl snuck into the yard with a homemade riceball to thank him, Zoro insisted on eating the entire thing to appreciate her efforts, even after the Captain's son stomped it into a dirtball and threw the girl out. This was what originally made Luffy like him and decide that he absolutely wanted to make Zoro part of his crew.
Despite being relatively level-headed, Zoro has an impulsive tendency to throw himself into things he wants to do headlong when he doesn't care about the consequences. (He tried to cut down a World Noble for shooting at him and generally being a Fucking Bastard, among other instances.) His self-confidence also leads him to not be particularly cautious of his own safety, as long as he sees himself as getting closer to his goal or protecting his nakama. For example, before obtaining Sandai Kitetsu he tossed the cursed sword in the air to see if it would fall and cut off his arm or land on the flat edge, pitting his luck against its curse. He also went swimming at least once in the freezing river of a winter island for the sake of training, and is terrible about following doctor's orders-he stripped off his bandages shortly after nearly dying on Thriller Bark, complaining that it was hard to move.
He can be stubborn as hell, and self-confident to the point where it turns into arrogance. He's also extremely competitive, as evidenced by his constant fights with Sanji, among other things. In addition, he sometimes has trouble considering other peoples' viewpoints, particularly when their complaint/issue is one he doesn't consider valid or feels that it's something they should just take care of themselves, so he can be pretty unsympathetic in those cases. As such, he tends to shut down or be unreceptive to people's whining and emotional displays; he can come across as sort of a heartless hardass because of his extreme practicality. (When the crew is depressed after Vivi's departure, he dismisses their sulking with exasperation.)
Kuina's death is still a huge sore point with him, and he fears disappointing her memory and breaking their promise, as well as his promise to Luffy that he wouldn't ever lose again. He hates breaking his promises in general, and failing, and being weak, and ever being a burden on his crewmates.
Lastly, for a nineteen year old guy with an overabundance of testosterone, Zoro is somewhat odd in that he's not shown as having much interest in anything to do with sex or romance of any kind in canon; in the bathhouse in the Alabastan royal palace, for example, he was the only guy who didn't grab a sneak-peek at Nami and Vivi over the dividing wall, and apparently had no inclination to do so. His focus on swords and getting stronger for his dream takes precedence over such things, presumably, but it's not touched on explicitly in the series.
[Specialties/Abilities]
Zoro doesn't have any traditionally supernatural powers, but he's stupidly physically strong through intense training from a young age; he's often compared to a monster or demon and simply goggled at by people. He survived being cut nearly in half by the greatest swordsman in the world and held his own, just barely, in a strenuous fight immediately afterward, with clumsy stiches barely holding his body together. He also recently survived the transfer of all of Luffy's battle damage on top of his own in Thriller Bark, though that brought him to the knife's edge of death (which he's still recovering from now). So he's extremely durable and has insane stamina.
He's a prodigiously talented swordsman, and with his three-sword-style is now closing in on the best swordsmen in the One Piece world in terms of skill. During the Alabasta arc he learned to cut through steel and mastered 'the sword that cuts nothing', so his swords obey him and only cut what he wants to be cut. During his fight with Mr. 1 he picked up a large stone building and chucked it at his opponent, so even his baseline strength is highly abnormal, though it comes from training and not superhuman powers. In the Skypiea Arc he first demonstrated the ability to perform long-distance strikes via air-pressure created by his sword swings, and has only refined this ability and made it much more powerful over time (he used it to punch a hole that a train could pass through in a massive tsunami by working with Luffy). He is constantly developing new and stronger skills.
He has limits to his endurance and power, like everyone else, although they're quite monstrous. He still can't cut intangibles such as lightning or light, or elemental 'logia'-style Devil Fruit users. He sleeps all the time, very heavily. In fact, he slept through the crew's entire first hellish day on the Grand Line, which was a comedy of wild storms and danger, even though he was sitting against a wall outside for the whole thing. He also has a tendency to fight and train himself past his own bodily limits, even when he's very injured.
[Affection]
Zoro isn't a particularly easy guy to get close to, but he's actually pretty damn lenient with the people he cares about, in terms of what they can get away with inflicting on him (the degree to which this is true depends on who exactly it is and what they're doing; being one of his important people won't necessarily save someone from retaliation if they do something stupid).
He's not open to displays of affection, especially from people he doesn't know, though he minds a lot less if it's coming from a naïve or young character, such as Luffy or Chopper. Clinging to him when frightened is canonically acceptable, although he'll look at you funny. Hugs are not welcome, but if you're someone he cares about or you're blackmailing him he'll tolerate it, with varying degrees of ill-grace. He doesn't encourage romantic affections or seek them out at all, but feel free to have your character like him or tease him in that way if they're so inclined-just realize that he'll respond ICly. Ie, if you "show affection" to him, be prepared to be rebuffed and/or swiped at with a sword and yelled at, depending.
I'm open to playing relationships, but I like them to develop in a natural manner over time, certainly following friendship first, and-especially for someone like Zoro, who's not even interested in that kind of thing in the first place-it'd be pretty unlikely. >.> But not impossible. PM or IM me if there's something you want to discuss in regards to this.
[Fighting]
As mentioned in the personality section, Zoro is a really damn badass fighter. However, he does get injured and especially bleeds a lot in fights, even if he just ends up shaking it off-he's kind of infamous for this, really; he loses more blood in some battles than he should even have in his whole body, by rights. So fighting/injuring is definitely a go; just IM or PM me to go over things if we get into a fight scene, so we're on the same page with regard to abilities and how it should all end up.
Zoro's attitude can also be provocative at times, and he loves fighting, especially if it's a challenge, so if your character does want to fight him, that's probably IC and doable. It is very, very unlikely that I would ever agree to let Zoro be killed, however. Details on Zoro's fighting style and abilities are listed on the One Piece wiki
here.
[Other Permissions]
Telepaths are free to read his mind, as long as it's something he's thinking about right then; he hasn't got defenses against that kind of thing other than stubbornness and natural closed-offedness. If it's something more like mind-control, talk it out with me through IM or PM, please. And no fourth-wall breaking, if you would.
I'm pretty lenient with other characters being intrusive with mine, physically or otherwise, as long as you're cool with accepting the IC consequences. Uhh, don't mess with his stuff without talking to me, though. There's nothing I can think of that I don't want a character to bring up with him.
[Other Facts] (quickly gleaning some important things that may also be mentioned somewhere above)
† Zoro can get lost in a straight hallway. Yes. It's happened. Do not trust him to get from point A to point B unescorted in any timely manner; the moment you take your eyes off of him, he will be Lost.
† Despite the above fact, he has a weird, unexplained knack for showing up at the right time and place when he's needed.
† He loves booze and has the alcohol tolerance of God. He also never seems to take any ill effects from drinking so much.
† He can sleep through anything. Anything.
† But he also has an acute sense for danger, so just because he's sleeping doesn't necessarily mean that he's vulnerable, or that he won't just pop an eye open at you unexpectedly.
