Author's Notes: Finally started! I'm so proud, even if I don't feel like it's totally perfect. (Far from it, really.) It's short, but I decided to make this into a series! WOO! The travelin' Tylers! <3 Here's my
table!
Aaron Tyler was a...sensible man. When he liked someone, he liked them, when he didn’t like someone, he didn’t like them, and when he was confused about why something was happening, he consulted his almost-doctorate in comparative religions to tell him that it couldn’t possibly be God. It was not God speaking to his younger sister through cow creamers, and mush-faced wax lions. It just wasn’t. And it certainly wasn’t God telling him that he wanted to kiss his sister. It just wasn’t. It wasn’t how things went, and it wasn’t something God said to do, therefore God didn’t exist.
Aaron was smart. He could see all the holes in that plan and he’d chosen to ignore them for a long time. They didn’t suit his needs anyway.
Aaron looked at Jaye as she wandered through her very small trailer. There, on what passes as a kitchen table, sat the cow creamer from their parent’s home. He crossed his legs and leaned back against the chair as it groaned in protest.
Jaye was buttoning her jeans while sticking a piece of unbuttered toast into her mouth. She was running late. Again. This was the third time in a week and Aaron doubted that Mouth Breather would be too happy about his sister’s tardiness. He was unreasonable like that.
“Aaron, I’ve got to go. Would you lock up when you, if ever, leave?” Aaron just nodded and uncrossed his legs. Aaron was perplexed with Jaye kissed him on the cheek. He would have asked her about it, but she was out of the door faster than he ever thought possible.
That was strange.
Over the course of the day, Aaron just sat around Jaye’s trailer. He spent the better part of said day just staring at the inanimate objects that his sister spent so much time talking to and taking orders from. He spent about an hour with Ms. Marie who brought over muffins for Jaye, who wasn’t there, of course. Aaron ate them all before his sister came home. He wasn’t sure why he’d done it, but he had and that was what mattered.
Aaron sat down on his sister’s obnoxiously red bed. Her covers weren’t made, so he laid down underneath them. They were warm, he’d give her that, even if they were atrocious in color. He turned to lay on his right side when his eyes caught on an iguana stuffed animal from Wonderfalls.
“Do you talk to my sister too?” He felt a little bit crazy, but he just wanted to know. To know what, though? That was the question. Sure, he wanted to know how his sister felt, what it felt like to have conversation with inanimate objects, what it felt like to feel compelled to do something because a mush-faced wax lion said you ought to, what it felt like to talk to God. Or Satan. Or just the universe in general. No one was really quite sure what it was.
“What the hell are you doing?” Aaron flipped in the bed and looked at Jaye’s form in the door way.
“Just talking to your iguana. What does he say to you?” Jaye threw off her coat and slung it on the chair that Aaron had occupied most of the day.
“The normal stuff. Do this, do that, don’t fall in love with him. Cryptic bullshit. Why?” She sat down at the foot of the bed and stared at him. Aaron looked over her shoulder, since he couldn’t bring himself to look straight into her eyes. The heat in his nether regions had started to build again.
“Oh, just curious. Say, when’s your next day off work?” Jaye cocked her head to the side with a suspicious look before she answered.
“Saturday. Why?” Aaron started to move out of the bed, spinning his body toward the stuffed iguana.
“I want to go down the coast to visit The Pie Hole. They’ve got the best pie in the whole world. Swear.” He smiled at her as he started to walk to the door.
“And?”
“And? And, would you like to come with me? My treat.” Jaye nodded before falling back on the bed. Aaron just smiled and took one last look at his sister before leaving the trailer for the day.
