Just got back from seeing The Golden Compass. Overall I am middling. Some parts I liked, others I didn't.

I loved pretty much everything with Iorek Byrnison.

I can't STAND that they removed the entire ending SCENE of the book, at Asriel's cabin in Svalbard.

I loved the look of the tech in the film's world, like the zepplins with glowing blue pulsar thrusters and that bizarre three-wheeled gyroscopic carriage. I don't quite recall the books having the tech quite so sci-fi off the top of my head, but I liked how it looked on screen nontheless.

In general, I think the movie felt crammed and a bit rushed. I can appreciate that there was a truck load of information and world-setting to convey without a lot of time to do it in, but that doesn't alleviate the sensation of having metaphysics textbooks stuffed into a cannon and shot at my face. It felt like a cliffsnotes presentation at times, or possibly as more of an advertisement for the books than an independant film.

Overall I rate it B-. The sheer awesomeness of Ian MacKellan as a gigantic armour-plated polar bear keeps it from a C.
