The Left Hand of Darkness by
Ursula K. Le Guin My review
rating: 4 of 5 stars
Admittedly, I'm better at movie and play reviews, but I'll give this a whirl! I learned of Ursula Le Guin and The Left Hand of Darkness at the Science Fiction Museum in Seattle, and I made a mental note to myself to check it out. Mainly because I wanted to branch out into a genre I'm not usually drawn to. I'm glad I ventured here. This book, for me, was really marked by the journey -- not only the long, physical journey to accomplish the ultimate goal of planet unification, but Genly's ultimate journey into understanding and acceptance of this strange alternate race of humans. Not man, not woman, but human. A lot of gender imagery -- male and female, the yin and the yang, lightness and darkness, good and evil... ultimately, I believe Le Guin's message is that men and women, we are one in the same -- or at least highly complimentary. I like to think she's right. Kudos to this read.
