Ducking down in the bushes I looked up and watched with tear filled eyes as Serenity took off, knowing it was most likely going to be the last time I’d see her. The captain didn’t know that I snuck out just before take off; he’d be rightly pissed if he found out.
I had to, as much as it frightened me, I couldn’t stay on the ship knowing that Simon and River were left out here alone. It wasn’t right and the captain knew it, he’s just too stubborn for his own good sometimes.
Turning I looked behind me and watched the sky till she was gone, not even a blip in the sky. I couldn’t help but sigh as I stood and looked around, trying to see where I was and where I would go first. I didn’t have any way of tracking them on my own, especially if they were nabbed by some of the locals.
“Simon, where are you? Where would you go…” Standing up slowly I nervously chewed my lip, brushing my hair off of my face and deciding on a direction.
I wasn’t sure where I was going or who I was looking for besides Simon and River, I had no clue what I was gonna do if I ran into some of the local foke. I mean they could be civilized like the rest of us - cept for Jayne - or they could be almost savage like. Who knows when you end up on these planets. All I knew was that I had to find them and then we could worry about getting them back on the ship.
It wouldn’t be long before they came back lookin’, I hope, I mean it’s not like Inara would go far knowing that I wasn’t on the ship, and Serenity…well she needed me, I was her mechanic.
Everything would work out for the best, I had to know that.
I started walking down a path that looked recently trailed down, little signs of newly broken branches and disturbed leaves lead me to believe that I was hopefully going down the right way.
That or I was going towards a trap. Most likely gonna end up in as much trouble as Simon and River, but hopefully I’ll find them somehow and we can get out of here.
I just had to have hope.
Walking towards the clearing I made careful of my footsteps, making sure I didn’t step on anything that could alert anyone to where I was. Holding my hands out in front of me I moved the brush aside to make a path that I could see.
It wasn’t long before I heart voices in the village ahead of me, I slowed my pace and winced when I stepped on a twig, nearly tripping and falling to the ground. “I ain’t gonna give up now.” I muttered softly to myself as I stepped over another branch, stopping short when I heard a twig snap behind me this time.
Didn’t have time to blink or move before I found myself face down on the ground with something over my face; then everything started to go dark…
Ginnin' from ear to ear I hurried home. I couldn't wait to tell Mamma and ask my dad if he'd let me go, I sure do hope he says yes. Granted I'm not keen on tellin' him exactly why I was on the ship anyhow... I'm sure I could go and make somethin' up.
"Mamma?!" I hurried into the house, the door slammin' behind me as I raced into the kitchen. "Mamma, Mamma." I hugged her tightly and pulled back to grin at her, she just laughed and looked at me confused. "Where's Daddy? I've somethin' I wanna tell ya'll."
"Your father's in the living room watching something on TV..." She didn't have time to finish and I pulled her into the living room and grinned down at my father.
"Kaylee Frye...what trouble did you go and get yourself into?" He looked at me and smiled slightly, somethin he don't do too often no more, not since he's been outta work.
"Nothin Daddy..." I grinned and sat down next to him, tucking my feet under me and taking his hand. "I've some good news..." Ok, gotta tell this and tell it right. I don't want him or mamma to say no. "I got offered a job...on a ship...workin' as their mechanic..." I sputtered everything out quickly, hopin' he would just be happy for me and not shoot me down right quick.
"A ship? Now what were you doin' on a ship Kaylee?" He looked at me and I nodded, biting my lip and tucking my hair away from my face as I tried to explain it, and keepin' the fact of what I was really doin' out of it. "Well, see....there was a cap'n and he'd done fired his engine guy and well he was babblin on about somethin done been broke and well." I shrugged and laughed. "I pointed it out to him that it wasn't broke, I quick fixed it and he offered me a job..."
I babbled on - usin' my hands as I almost always do - and told him all about the Captain and the ship, she sure was a beauty too.
He raised his hands and held my wrists, lookin' into my eyes before he grinned. "Go on girl, get packed!"
I coulda sworn I heard voices as I blinked and shook my head, everythin' felt heavy and it was like I was in some sorta fog. Trying to rub my eyes I felt my arms stop and that just seemed weird. Pulling my arms again my eyes went wide. "Let me go!"
There was another voice and my head snapped and I caught sight of him. "Simon!" Desperately I pulled away, steppin' on one of the men's feet before running towards Simon and hugging him tightly. I wasn't sure what I was more glad about, seein' him or havin' those men's hands offa me.
Pullin' back after I wondered if he felt awkward - gee, I hope not - I looked up at him, pullin' a dried leaf out of his hair. "You ok? Alright, as ok as you can get with bein' held captive 'n all?" Where's River?
