Year in Review 2009: Holding Pattern

Dec 30, 2009 22:58

Truth takes time.
Alias Season 2
My silly brain doesn't know how to sit still and enjoy the moment, so I spent much of 2009 obsessing over What's Next.  My first draft of this entry was sort of whiny, actually - I've been doing the same thing all year, what's to remember?  I've been complacent, lazy.

But then I made this list:

Indoor tanning and Taco Bell.
Never making it to the beach or hiking.
Brunch.  Everywhere.
So You Think You Can Dance, Season 5.
Fiesta Cantina and Java Detour.
Kayaks, potlucks, and sunburns in Long Beach.
NOH8 rallies in LA and a march on Washington!
OkCupid, dating, and one almost-boyfriend.
Sunset at the Hollywood Bowl.
Free Kelly Clarkson concert!
Hollywood fundraisers with star appearances and lots of insecurity.
Surviving three rounds of layoffs.
Being best man at Doug's wedding.
San Diego, Palm Springs, and Disneyland.
Twenty-five terrifying phone calls at the Trevor Project.
Real life Single Ladies performances.
Um, Panama, hello!
Two Buck Chuck, the corner liquor store, blended chai at Marie et Cie, and take-out O-Thai.
Mom and Dad selling the house I grew up in.
Kooza.
10-cent wings at Big Wang's.
A Very Important Conversation about marriage equality, and equality in our family.
Finally applying for the Equality Ride.  Getting accepted for the Equality Ride.

A normal year.  There's big stuff in there, like trips and relationships and future plans.  But the little stuff (as ever, I suppose, but it always surprises me) made the biggest impact - falling asleep in the living room to the falling dusk, a look around the picnic table at all your gathered friends.

With the Equality Ride looming in two months, I am beginning to feel life resume its forward momentum.  Or perhaps I am imagining it.  I guess I don't really know what makes for momentum anymore.

So all I can end with is a profound gratitude for the bounty of 2009.  And a hope that, at this time next year, I will again be able to look back and remember so many small moments of grace, peace, and happiness.  Here's to 2010!
