Tito Mars has been crucial to my involvement in the community since 2004. Throughout the years, he not only taught me compassion and humility, he also showed me kindness and love.
In 2004, I started volunteering for "Tahanan" (Tagalog for 'Home') every Saturday to cook lunch and interact with elderly Filipinos--a program he founded in 1998. He cultivated and encouraged me, like many other young people, to serve and to 'give back' to the community. Now, I 'upped' my involvement by serving as one of the board of directors for the Filipino Community of Seattle. It's because of him that I continue to strive to do everything I can....
Every time he walked into the room, you were immediately drawn to him. The room lit up when he laughed. But most of all, he looked at you like you're a part of his family. As a recent transplant from Hawaii, he truly made me feel like I belonged.
There were so many things he did that inspires me. But one of my favorite things about my adopted Tito is that he loved to sing. And he had such a beautiful voice. Here he sings a Tagalog song called "Dahil Sa Iyo" (Because of You), he's wearing the green sweater.
