MISTRUST

--

She’s never fallen for a girl before. Until now, it’s always been the cute, lithe guys with dyed hair and nice eyes, the beautiful men on the posters lining her bedroom walls. The boys on the sports teams at school, like Sanada-senpai, or the mysterious, charming types like Minato-kun.

She can’t help but think that - at least on looks - her heart’s chosen well though, if she had to fall for another woman. Glossy red hair, beautiful body, flawless face, and the bearing of an Empress… A damn shame about the “ice-bitch” personality, really. All those lies and secrets, and the thrice-damned Kirijo name, made her worry about her sanity when her heart stuttered on seeing her. It’s a pitiful situation - if she didn’t have to feel such suspicion against every word out of those soft lips, she could have found her voice really quite pleasant.

But when she sees Mitsuru in a silk gown at 4 o’clock in the morning, walking into the kitchen in search of the milk currently grasped in her own hand, she can’t help but forget for a second who they are and what they’re up to on most other nights, and enjoy the sight of that beautiful, pale skin glowing almost white, that gorgeous red waterfall of hair mussed from sleep, and those dreamy eyes widening in that pretty face - because in a few hours it’ll be back to suspicions and masks.

It’s one of the few things that she’s never, never told Akihiko. She knows he’d understand - she hasn’t missed those lingering glances over Arisato-kun’s retreating from - but she also knows that he would encourage her to talk about it, or tell the girl how she felt, as if it were really that simple. As if he’d do the same.

She knows how she feels about her, anyway. She feels the same, to some extent - it’s only natural, she supposes, to mistrust those who mistrust you. It still hurts, of course. She wants those pretty eyes to reflect longing and affection, not suspicion and thinly veiled anger.

Honestly, she often wonders why the girl (for she’s certainly a girl, not a woman and most definitely not a lady) captivates her so. In some areas perhaps her naturally auburn hair would stand out as unusual, but in a city like Port Island - full of eccentric, individual, modern young people - it seems almost drab. Her eyes are pretty, to be sure, but she usually preferred clear blue to those warmer shades of brown and hazel; she had a nice figure - not too thin, with curves in all the right places… Mostly it was her personality that drove her mad - in all senses of the phrase. Her determination, kindness, cheerful disposition, catty attitude and darned bull-headed stubbornness made her love and hate her in equal parts.

Now if only she could convince Yukari that she’s not going to attempt kill her in her sleep.
