Last week, my mom wrote a long post about feminism and other topics, and there was one part in particular that struck me. She wrote about beliefs about female equality in Soviet Union (and post-Soviet Russia - because cultural mores don't change overnight). For the sake of all the non-Russian speakers reading this, I'm going to translate the

I'm torn about your choice to put "ordinary" in the novella synopsis. It's not a translator's job to cover up the author's bias. It's a tough line to toe: on one hand, you want the translation to evoke the same feelings in its new readers as the original did in its intended audience; on the other - you can't "sanitize" cultural shortcomings out of a text.

To be honest, I struggled with it, too. But when it came to the synopsis... I thought the author meant well, I didn't want American readers to prejudge the novella based on a small word choice. Especially since she was aiming at the American audience.

Plus, there were some other parts within the novel itself that might raise a few eyebrows which I kept as is (largely because changing them would require more substantial rewrites, and I figured that, as a translator, it wasn't my job to suggest that sort of thing.

(Which isn't consistent of me, I know, but there you go)
