Osama Bin Laden is dead.

So, the Internet is abuzz with news that Osama Bin Laden is dead - the news that has been confirmed by both US and Pakistani intelligence, so I am inclined to assume it's legitimate.

(Of course, as someone who grew up on 90s action movies, I can't help but wonder ;) )

The reality of the matter is that Bin Laden's death won't end the conflict. Al Queda is still active, and it can survive without Bin Laden's leadership. Ditto other terrorist organizations. But one should not underestimate the propaganda value of his death. For America, this represents an important milestone, a symbolic payback for the September 11 attacks. For Al Queda, it is undoubtedly a blow to its credibility. Sure, they can turn Bin Laden into a martyr, but Bin Laden's death still sends a clear message - no matter how protected Al Queda leaders may think they are, American forces (and their allies) can get them.

And hey, I was in this country on September 11, too. It may not be as personal as it is for Americans reading this, but it's still satisfying.

Me, I am dreading all the ways both parties will exploit Bin Laden's death over the next few months and years. But for now - Good job American forces, good job Pakistani forces, and, heck, good job Obama Administration.

And now, the spinning begins.

Edit: Actually, a thought occurs to me. Bin Laden financed and trained Mujahideen, who killed and maimed thousands of Soviet soldiers. Granted, my people were invading, but realizing it was quite satisfying.
