What is
Alom.net? Most of you probably have no idea. Heck, I never heard of it until I looked at
IMDb's Bottom 100 list. As of this writing, this movie holds the #1 spot. This means that, according to Internet Movie Database users, this is the worst movie in existence. Worse than Manos: The Hands of Fate. Worse than Monster a Go-Go. Worse than the previous #1 spot holder - Superbabies: Baby Geniuses 2.
So what did this movie do to deserve such notoriety? Hard to say. The movie is in Hungarian - a language that's related to Russian, but nowhere near close enough for me to understand it. As far as I know, it was never dubbed or subbed in English. From what I've been able to gather, the movie is a shameless regurgitation of hundreds of American teen movie cliches. It seems to be centered around Regina, a popular girl who was forced to transfer to a conservative private school. The culture clash seems to ensue. And also, there seems to be cheerleading involved.
Cheerleading. That most American of sports. I don't think they have cheerleading in Hungary. I don't think they really have cheerleading anywhere outside United States (except possibly Canada).
The film apparently stars a bunch of Hungarian pop stars who, apparently, really suck at acting. Alom.net seemed to have been widely promoted in Hungary, which probably helped to inspire the backlash.
Looking around the net, I was able to find a couple of reviews,
an official website, a
few clips and the
closest thing the movie has to an English-language trailer.
Is it really as bad as IMDb users suggest? I have no idea. It does not seem to be offensively awful - but than, I don't speak Hungarian. I really wish I could find a review in either of the languages I understand. Until than, we can only speculate on the nature its awfulness.
I will admit, though - that cheerleader song is obnoxiously catchy.
