Back around at April of this year, Chicago Police Superintendent (a police chief, basically) Garry McCarthy announced a "Neighborhood Listening Tour." The idea was that he and some other high-ranking officials will visit each and every one of the city's police districts, talk to local residents and hear their concerns. It was billed as a way for the police to get in touch with the communities it served.
But as the listening tour actually got under way, it became clear that it was shaping up to be something else entirely. The press wasn't allowed inside. Neither were some people who wanted to speak.
As I've written before, I am currently doing some freelance work for Austin Weekly News, a community newspaper covering must of Chicago's West Side. On Wednesday, I was sent to cover a meeting that took place in Austin neighborhood. And I got to see first-hand how the "Neighborhood Listening Tour."
