The country song sexism spectrum

Back in July, the sister singing duo Maddie & Tae made a bit of a splash in the country music with "Girl In a Country Song" - a gentle, tongue-in-cheek take that of the so-called "bro-country" songs.

Now, pretty much everything I know about country music comes from Nashville. Which isn't very much at all. But even if you are not a country fan, it was hard to miss Florida Georgia Line's "Cruise." And, from what I understand, country songs are traditionally more...chivalrous when it comes to treating women. So I understood what Maddie & Tae were talking about.

Around the same time, another singer, a certain RaeLynn, released a song called "God Made Girls."

When I started watching this video, I figured it wouldn't be that bad. It seemed romantic. But it quickly became apparent that, according to RaeLynn, God made girls to basically be accessories to men. Pleasant, charming accessories, accessories that make men feel good, but accessories nonetheless.

Now, I get that there are women who are very devoted to their boyfriends, but to this extent...

In a month when the country music saw the release of a song asking guys not to treat women as objects, it also saw release of a song by a woman saying that women are totally objects.

Funny how those things work out.
