The art of Cats and St. Petersburg

Jul 16, 2014 21:43

In her recent post, zoyae put together a gallery of paintings by Vladimir Rumyantsev - an artist from my home city of St Petersburg who is known for lovely and often surreal paintings, many of which included cats. zoyae wanted to draw attention to the paintings that feature St. Petersburg cityscapes... and angels.

To someone who grew up in the city, those paintings are achingly familiar, filled with architectural references many non-natives probably wouldn't get. But I hope that, even if you've never seen the city, you'd be able to appreciate them.

And I know tweelore, at least, has actually been to some of those places.

I've cross-posted the images as is, translating the paintings' titles where they're provided

" Angel of the St. Peter and Paul Cathedral"

" Fishermen"

" Relaxation"

"A Happy Meeting"

" Viva Piter!" ["Piter," as you may recall from the earlier posts, is a nickname for St. Petersburg]

"Walking the Sphinx"

" Snowfall"

" Halloween, Piter-style"

" Fishing Inspectors"

" He loves me!"

" Lucky!"

" Sports fan"

"A Peterburg Romance"

"Angel with Birdies"
