Showtime premium cable network has a new show. According to the promos, Penny Dreadful would be a supernatural show that would feature 19th century characters like Frankenstein (and his monster), Dracula and Dorian Gray. I was intrigued - for all its flaws, I quite enjoyed NBC's Dracula, and I expected it to be something in that vein. (if you've never seen it,
cleolinda's
recaps summarize what wound up being the show's only season quite well).
Turned out it wasn't quite like NBC's Dracula - it took itself more seriously, and it was more dramatic and disturbing than the other show. It took even more liberties with the source material than Dracula did, which is saying something. And, in the end of the day - I thought it works. If I still had premium cable, I would have kept watching. if not - I'll get the DVD when it comes out.
The first episode is online and free. I'm not sure if it will play outside USA, or how long it will stay up, but for now, check it out and judge for yourself.
