Some time ago, I found a video that offered a rather fascinating look at a right-wing Evangelical group that lobbies for Israel for all the wrong reasons.
Check it out. The said part is, many of the people involved actually mean well - they really, honestly want everyone to be saved. However, that does not change the fact that even the more well-meaning ones see Jews as little more then props in a great global apocalyptic saga where they (the right-wing Evangelicals) are the real stars.
Let me elaborate. As the documentary shows so well, the people assembled at the conference view Jews purely in terms of their end-day beliefs that have little to do with the actual Bible anyway (but that's a whole other tangent entirely). So long as Jews play the part in their beliefs, they're more then happy to support them. This makes Jews little more then props, to be used and discarded as the right-wing Evangelicals see fit. That in itself is troublesome. But the fact that those people actually have influence on American politics is, quite simply, scary. These are not the kind of friends Jewish people should rely on, and these are certainly not the kind of people who should have any hand in formulating America's foreign policy in the region. I am amazed that Joe Lieberman, who really should know better, doesn't see that.
Jewish people have a legitimate cause and legitimate grievances. However, right-wing Christians should not be the ones to address them. Hopefully, in the future, calmer heads will prevail and American policy in the Middle East might actually take a turn for the sane.
