snatched this from jolinar-rosha As I attempt to get back into the LJ on a regular basis, it seemed like a good opportunity to reconnect with everyone

Yep, I'm from Greece. But I've been an English geek pretty much since I've stepped foot in an english language classroom. Having Aussie cousins has helped immensely, because from a young age I could try and struggle my way through writing and speaking to them; being a sci-fi/fantasy fan has helped even more, because more than half the series/comic books/books we don't get translated here, so I had no choice but to watch/read them in the original.
(I still remember the very first XMEN my dad got for me, so I could read the language; I couldn't understand half of what I read - it was like a year later that I finally figured out that Cannonball's 'Ah reckon' meant 'I think so'. :P)
Thor has always been my favourite Avenger - the movie must have you pretty excited, no? :D I don't actually have a single favourite mutant, because I love a bunch of them, but my 3 favourite males are Wolverine, Nightcrawler and Colossus. Oh, and Angel. Mustn't forget Angel. And Magneto. Because he's awesome. (see? I just can't pick. :P) It's easier with the women: Mystique, Storm and Jean.
I fail at knowing a second language though i can bluff my way through enough Spanish to find the bathroom and other essentials. I think that's awesome that you actually teach a foreign language. and you've been learning it since you were little. Comics were definitely a good reason to learn!
As for mutants I have the same top three (we have so much in common!) plus gambit. I loved the old Kitty Pride (she and Storm were my favorite female mutants) Colossus teen romance stories back in the 80's but I haven't read a comic in ten years though I have a basement full of them from years of collecting - fiances got tight and they were the firdt thing to go.
fit's not to weird to find a comic book character hot then - I find Thor incredibly hot- especially when Simonson drew him with the beard
In Greece it's pretty much essential to speak English at the very least, considering how dependent on the turist industry our economy is. Which, of course, is good for me... :P
I like Gambit too, he's an awesome character. Or should I say, the old Gambit. I don't know, while several current storylines are good enough, it seems that for the past 5 to 6 years what the writers have done to most characters is just... I don't wanna say awful, but they've changed them in ways that makes them, um, not themselves. (Don't get me started on the whole Cyclops/Emma Frost thing, because I start frothing at the mouth, much like Wolverine when he found out).
I loved the old Kitty too! Thankfully she's one of those that haven't changed much beyond growing up - still waiting for her and Colossus to get married... Because, come on, people!! :P
And since you mentioned tight finances - yep, I just had to cut expenses these past months, and it was my comic books who had to go. It still feels like a severed limb in some ways...
I love the versions that were around 20 ys ago I was hard core collector in college. One of the first x-men issues I ever bought was the John byrne issues that body traveled Kitty to the future. Needless to say I was hooked as that is considered a classic run in the series.
I was so sad that Gmabit in the wolverine movie was kind of useless But then that whole movie sucked and misrepresenting Gambit was just one problem with its story telling. I sometimes wonder what the characters are up to but I won't open that money pit again. It's too easy to drop a ton at the comic book store every week
I was SO very excited about Wolverine, and it was so disappointing. I suppose it might be ok if you're not familiar with the character's background, but for a fan it was like... what are you doing to my Logan, stop it!! And it's a pity, because Hugh Jackman was basically born to be Wolverine. :(
