After being in Birmingham for most of the week, my DVR was full and I spent most of Saturday catching up. I thought I'd share some thoughts about Stargate:Universe.
I am a huge Stargate: SG-1 and Stargate: Atlantis fan. The franchise holds special significance for me because the first conversation I ever had with my now husband was about Stargate and we bonded over geeky love of the series. Stargate was also the first fandom I found on line and my gateway into all things LJ
So it just kills me to say I really dislike SG:U. What the hell have they done to my wonderful franchise?
They have turned Stargate into a Battlestar Glactica wanna be and done it badly. For the record I watched BSG but was never a huge fan and I hated ST: Voyager. I'm just not a fan of the "lost in space" scifi genre. Every episode in the beginning is about finding water or food or supplies and you know they are going to find them or there's no series.
The producers say they wanted to make the SG:U more realistic. Seriously? Stargate is a show about a big metal ring that creates worm holes to other planets; how realistic is it ever gonna be? Still it's clear that the producers definitions of realistic means characters have sex, waste time whining about their feelings and are generally an unlikable bunch.
The group stuck on this ship is among the most unappealing group I've ever seen on a TV show. Please someone space the idiot senator's daughter. It seems her only job is to whine and have sex with the Lt. Scott while of course being a tease to Eli.
Eli is also annoying- he tries to bring the funny but his jokes and pop culture references are lame - not clever. I loved it when Rush told him to grow up
Speaking of Rush - he's a solid character and the portrayal by Robert Carlyle makes Rush th eonly character worth my time. Rush is an interesting character and I like that hecolaborates with Eli and his other scientist. So while he knows a lot, unlike Col. Carter, he doesn't seem to know everything. So yeah producer's, Rush is a more realistic character
TJ has been improving. Originally, I found her a bit whiney too with her "I'm not even supposed to be here today" lament, but after last night's episode, she's coming into her own as a stronger female presence.
So I find all but two of the characters annoying. The story lines are in one word: BORING. Too much time was spent in early episodes meeting with people back on earth lamenting their lost in space status. The meaningless "woe is us" discussions waste time. there's yet to be an exciting adventurous type episode. I have yet to be surprised by an episode. The search for water or the search for supplies - again we've seen this done before and done better. At least in Battlestar they had the cylons chasing them to make it interesting.
I miss my snarky commanding officers: Sheppard, O'Neil & Mitchell. Young is a solid military man, but so far - he's not very interesting. I miss McKay but I do Like Rush. But most of all I the b-team those characters like Lorne and Zelenka, who make the cast feel complete and add depth to the stories because we care about everyone not jut the main characters.
So thumbs down to SG:U but I'd love to hear your thoughts, especially if you like it.
