The Year In Review - Writing Meme

Dec 31, 2008 16:24

I got tagged by Wizefics to list my favorite five stories of the year. Truthfully it would be easier to list the five stories I didn't like that I wrote this year. In addition, I am including the Year in Review meme.

First The Stats:
Total fics written this year: I wrote 47 fics all but three were crossovers. You can find links to everything I've written here;

Fandoms Supernatural, Highlander, Smallville, NCIS, Firefly, and Maginificent 7 for the most part but also at least one story in Numb3rs, House, Quantum Leap and Eli Stone

Total Words: ~224,000 words. I just don’t see how I could have written that much. It makes choosing my favorites that much harder.

So top Five Favorites (cheating a little here):
1) Ghost Town/ Best Laid Plans: Mag7/Supernatural/Smallville: I can't really separate these two because they are connected. This story launched me into a new fandom and I created my first OMC with a big role in a story but the biggest reason I love it is the poker game between Ezra and Dean.

2) Since I found Serenity: HL/SPN/SV/Firefly: Immortal Dean in the firefly universe. Juggling 13 characters was a real writing challenge. Of course the main reason I love it is because I found a way to bring Sam and Dean together again after 500 years that made sense to me.

3) A Muse Explains It All Total crack! A conversation with my muse that I admit still cracks me up. I think it maybe one of the funniest things I've ever written and made cheese a very important part of the writing process.

4) The Last Chance Texaco SPN/SV: I had to stop Chloe from Marrying Jimmy. I only wish it had happened like this on the show. Some straight up Chlean and a happy ending.

5) Five Times Dean Talked to Sam About Babies: Immortal Dean Universe: Five snippets of classic Winchester banter through the years on the topic of babies. The final section is the first appearance of Jonathan Dean Winchester. I love JD and I'm so glad I brought him into existence. I find this story hilarious and touching. It was by far the easiest thing I've ever written.

Some more questions to answer about my writing this year.

The Year in Review
My favorite story this year:
Of the five listed above that's tough - so I'll pick something completely different - consider it #6 on my list: Rite of Passage: This was the first Immortal!Uncle Dean story. I wrote and I just adore JD Winchester and all of his adventures.

My best story this year:
Ghost Town: This Supernatural/Magnificent 7 crossover launched me into a new fandom and people went crazy over it. It has garnered more positive feedback than any other story I’ve written and spawned a sequel

Story most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion:
The Space She Invades: Highlander/Supernatural. I introduce Sam’s future wife Katie and I love it for that reason alone but the rest of the world seemed to ignore it

Most fun story: I love to write funny stories so this was a tough choice. I've mentioned a few already but here's a couple more.
Meet The Mallards NCIS/HL: Richie Ryan meets Ducky and Mrs. Mallard with a side of Abby.

Old Dog, New Tricks Methos meets Dean for the first time in the Immortal!Dean Universe. Needless to say Methos does not like to be wrong.

Most sexy story & Story with single sexiest moment (I combined these because this is pretty much the only story I wrote that even hinted of sex):
Would You Go With Me? Sam and Katie - The one with the marriage proposal

Story with single sweetest moment:
Child Of My heart HL/Mag7 In the midst of all of Ezra's angst over becoming Immortal there are some really nice moments between him and his surrogate mother Charlotte. I adore their relationship.

Most unintentionally *telling* story: (what does that even mean)
For a glimpse inside my brain: A Muse Explains It All Pure Crack and scary insight into the idea that my muse and I have regular conversations.

"Holy crap, that's *wrong*, even for you" story:
Into The Coming Storm. HL/SPN/SV/FF: It seems I write one story every year where I torture the crap out of someone - this time it's Sam. Sam has to perform a blood ritual to save Zoe from becoming a Reaver - I can’t believe what I implied happened to him but he did get to be the Hero

Biggest disappointment:
Not so much a story but the one that wasn’t written - the final arc in the Firefly/Supernatural Immortal Dean universe. It just won’t get written. But I am still trying I swear.

Biggest surprise:
Turn It Up To Eleven: SPN/Macgyver: The Wee!chesters meet MacGyver who helps Dean build an awesome birthday present for Sam. I started this story in 2007 and couldn’t get it right so I filed it away for months never intending to look at it again. Then pen37 gave me some advice and it turned into something really special and from the feedback response I’d say it was a lot of people's favorite story of mine

Hardest story to write:
Anytime I sign up for a ficathon I find myself beating my head against a wall. So I don’t plan to do it any more (famous last words). I'd have to say the one I wrote for this year HLH_Shortcuts : Chivalry Isn't Dead. A non crossover Highlander story featuring Joe Dawson. Nothing about this story was in my wheelhouse but I got it done

Easiest story to write:
Five Times Dean Talked to Sam About Babies This story was written in less than an hour after the plot bunny was thrown at me by Pen37 I wish they could all be this easy and this good.

This year's theme and the story that demonstrates it most:
Since Spawn fic rules my world this year along with Mag7, I would have to pick Welcome to High School, Little Brother JD defends his brother from some bullies. JD Winchester’s best friends in the story are teen versions of some of the Mag7 guys and I just like that idea so much. I also think it shows a lot about who I think JD is - he cares about family, he's a leader and he never backs down from a fight becasue - well he's a little egotistical about his skills

Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted?: I started writing fic in June 2007, and in six months wrote about 100,000 words. I’d hoped to write at least that much in 2008 but I never expected to write over 200,000 words; that just floors me

What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January 2007?: I had never even heard of the Mag7 TV show until six months agoand I wrote huge amounts in this fandom.

Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?:
ithildyn handed me her very precious OFC Charlotte Sparrow for a Mag7 story. While fanfic is all about writing someone else’s creations, the opportunity to write someone else’s OFC was a bit daunting at first. I was and still am flattered by the trust she put in me to do her character justice. I learned a lot about my ability to write OCs and I learned that no one can resist Ezra Standish. Ith is a major Mag7 fangirl now and Charlotte feels like a canon character to me.

Do you have any fanfic or profic goals for the New Year?: Just to keep writing. I would really like to finish the Firefly arc in the Immortal!Dean series. Those Reavers aren’t going to hold off on the apocalypse forever.

My other goal: I will not turn anyone else Immortal. So don’t ask, I won’t do it.

Thank you to everyone who has read one of my stories. Thank you for all your support and your feedback.

I have the most amazing Flist - You guys are the greatest!! *hugs you all*

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!
