Today I watched a rather delicious movie called
Sakkar Banat (2007) or Caramel. It's about the lives of five Lebanese women living in Beirut. I love stories like this, rather simple, rather down to earth with no definitive answer or resolution in the end. The lives of the women are very different, a young girl having an affair with a married man, a woman about to start the second chapter of her life and get married. A closeted lesbian (not a lot was shown about her which I found kind of disappointing), a middle aged woman going through menopause and finally an old woman who has a chance at a first love.
The main stage is a beauty parlor, where, no matter who you are or where you're from are all pretty much the same. Ladies gossip, and form friendships and seek advice. The characters grow, develop, but not all of them change. Well shot and well acted it's a romance without being too romantic. I loved the beautiful shots, the simple yet touching relationships and how not everything ends well.
I am not sure why this didn't get more play in theaters but I will say that I'll take a romantic comedy like this over, You've Got Mail, and some of the other shit that passes as romantic movies these days.
