Sandor Clegane is a serious, gruff and often quiet man who is fiercely loyal to those he serves. He is called hound and dog both due to his house sigil of three dogs running on a field as well as his demonstrated fierceness and loyalty to his masters. When we first meet Sandor he obeys every order without question, even going so far as to cease battling his brother Gregor at the King’s tourney when the king order it, even when doing so leaves his back vulnerable to attack. It is during this event when Loras declares him a champion that Sandor also displays a degree of shyness at the attention of the crowd.
What he lacks in social abilities he makes up for in fierce confidence and his own sense of honor. Sandor disdains knights for their hypocrisy and refuses to be knighted even when appointed to the Kingsguard. This disdain is based on his hatred for his brother who tortured him as a boy.
Despite his outer nature, Sandor has an appreciation for beautiful things that he finds lacking in himself due his extensively scarred face. These same things can raise his ire depending on his mood and he often lashes out. He often calls Sansa a pretty little bird and has asked her to sing for him. He has a fondness for her and even tries to stay Joffrey’s hand when he wants to hurt her. He grows fond of Arya as well during their travels after he takes her captive for ransom.
Sandor has a grim and morbid sense of humor that often comes out more the worse kind of situation he’s in. He swears and laughs at his captors in the face of his imminent execution. He’s persistent and fears nothing that men can do to him, not even death.
After he flees the capital when the fires ravage it, he’s determined to no longer put his loyalty towards anyone and become his own man. At one point he considers joining Robb Stark. But it is not out of loyalty, but survival. He’s a fighter and his rage and hatred towards his brother is what drives him - so much that he’ll take any opportunity to find a way to kill him.
