Alright, so apparently bottled water is an extreme drain on the world's natural resources. And is, on average, neither healthier nor less risk than the municipal tap water in North America. In many cases, bottled water is less healthier and more contaminated than tap water because water from the tap is regulated by the government, while bottled water is considered a food and is regulated by food laws for safe packaging and such. Food laws that are by no means water specific and leave many carcinogens and dangerous metals such as lead in the water. Tap water is also checked weekly by an official apointed by the state, while bottled water facilities need only to be checked once a year. As well, much of the bottled water we consume is just tap water that is sometimes purified and sometimes not; you are just paying for essentially the same thing, but not properly regulated and wastefully packaged. Land fills and rivers are full of the expensive to recycle, plastic bottles. So, while you spend around two dollars for possibly unsanitary water that comes in a pretty package, know that you could have gotten 1,000 gallons of tap water at home, and that you are adding to a world wide environmental problem.
I just did a project on this while drinking Aquafina. Turns out Aquafina, "the taste of purity" was made in Missisauga. It comes from municipal tap water. Mmm, I can just smell the Missisauga glaciers and natural springs.
