i went to see suzanne vega at the parkwest theater last night. her songs were so beautiful and even more heartrending live. it truly is a gift not only to be able to write beautifully - but to be able to write music to go along with it. a man called Richard Julian opened the show for her - his songs were also very beautiful. the both of them seemed like such sincere, soulful strummers that the likes of john mayer and rachael yamagata will never reach. it's just a completely different era.
she sang 'new york is a woman' and asked the chicagoans who their city would be if it were a person - the answer was 'a man'. a man in a pinstriped suit, she said. a man in a tool-belt, the audience replied. i'm slowly learning to love this city. the sleepy, smoky feel of it at night. the people who talk to you on trains and tell you they love your shoes or purse. still, i long for singapore - if singapore were a person, she would be a woman. a young woman, on the right side of 25 and still coming of age. yet to lose her innocence, but perhaps on the brink of it.
