I saw A Day in the Death of Joe Egg yesterday, at the Subiaco Arts Centre, with angriest in the cast.
It is a very good play. Essentially, it is a very black comedy about caring for a very disabled child. Except it is also about the futility of black comedy as a coping mechanism, so at the end it sort of spirals down into darkness quite dramatically.
When first shown in 1967, the play must have been quite astonishing.
The cast were on the whole very good. The odd wrong note, but less due to any deficiencies in the cast, and more due to it being a very demanding play, that demands both comic timing and serious dramatic pathos, sometimes within the one sentence, the two main roles really require the actors to be comedians as well.
Of course, I thought angriest was particularly good, but I think you are always more impressed by good acting in people you know really well, as the change it mannerisms is so striking.
Anyway, if you live in Perth, I recommend going to see this show, on the proviso that you enjoy it when your comedy mixed with a little bleak despair. Which I do, rather.
