Fic: Orange-White-Grey

Jan 03, 2009 13:48

Well, I'm back in Edmonton and it was -34 when I arrived up here. To assuage my feelings on this situation, I'm girding my loins and posting a bit of original fic. :-D

1100 words with a couple of my One-Way Streets boys. Let's call it PG-14 with a drug and language warning. Concrit always welcomed.

Everything changed when Reni snatched a smoldering chair leg out of the fire, brandished it at K.R. with a ferocious determination that he did not feel, and told him that he’d better get the fuck out right now. )

fic, one-way streets, fic: original fic

Gah, wow, my dear. You've definitely got to keep developing this. I think it really has potential. It reminds me a bit Neal Stephenson with some Ursula LeGuin in the background, but I couldn't tell you exactly why those two are coming to mind.

The part with the pill color? Awesome. Very resonant with our pharmaceutical culture today. And I really loved the image of Remi picking around for dead birds - and defying a taboo doing so. (Poor tiny birds, my journal hands got you! ;))

In sum? Keep at this. You've got something here, and I wouldn't be surprised if you were able to get it published someday. But you know I adore your writing so, perhaps I'm minorly biased. Only a smidge, I promise! There are definitely some spots I would flesh out - possibly you do in other chapters, but like I say, really solid writing, lady. It's a creature feature! /ramblegushing

asdfjklomg, I was just a tiny bit terrified to post this, my Chlare, and I'm awfully glad you're the brave soul who gave it a try. So thank you for your comments, sincerely! (I... haven't actually read anything by either of those writers. *shame* But I'll certainly look 'em up! They sound like the type I'd enjoy.)

Truth be told, this isn't actually part of the NaNo story itself... That story takes place years after this when Reni's world has seriously fallen apart and he's subsequently gotten himself back on his feet again with Mister Looks-Oddly-Like-Nivola's help. *g* So I can mess it all up again, BWAHAHA! I was just goofing around here trying to figure out the weird K.R./Reni vibes that kept sneaking in. And now I'm trying very hard not to sound too insane. :-D

*DANCES!*

Aww. :) You're very welcome. (Sci-fi, the both of them so I'm sure you'd enjoy them. I've only read The Left Hand of Darkness by LeGuin, but there's a similar eerie feel in her stuff that you've got. Plus some nice gender bending. And I'd highly recommend Snow Crash, and Cryptonomicon by Stephenson. More futuristic and computer-related but with the same penchant for those AU details that make a place/future that seems so damn real.)

Woe! But omg, backstory flashback! You could work it in! *wheedles* Heheh. :) You know I'm a sucker for the backstory. But you could also do a series of these as little short stories! *is totally unhelpful in getting you back to editing the actual novel* Insane is good. Insane means you're still crazy about your story. :D

*twirls you madly*

Funny enough, when I was reading their Wiki entries, Left Hand of Darkness was one that popped out at me as an 'ooh, I should read that' book. *g* And my lovely grandparents spoiled me with a bookstore gift certificate for Christmas, so I should get myself over there!

Man, this is why the editing thing is such work! The 'story'-story all takes place within a rather action-packed week, but to understand what the heck is going on, you almost need to know about five years worth of info from before that point. I am in SO FAR over my head and have resorted to ridiculous amounts of doodling.

But you could also do a series of these as little short stories!

Oh, I fully intend to, if only so the darn thing doesn't eat my brain when I'm not looking.

*twirls for you 'till I'm goofy*

Well, if you should ever want/feel comfortable enough to want an extra set of eyes on it... You know where to find mine. :)

*chompchompchomp* What? *innocent*

Nah, editing is fun! Way easier than actually writing the stuff. It's like putting together a puzzle and I do like puzzles. (Hey, anytime. :) Without a doubt.)

Lock your doors, hide your brains!

*snickers* Oh, I may have to make that my secondary title to my journal. Hee hee. Oh- so speaking of Heroes, you have to tell me if the third season is worth me getting past the third episode. That is, if you were able to get caught up. :)

Re: Heroes... Bearing in mind that I've yet to track down the second season, the third really couldn't hold a candle to the first season, but it definitely had its unmissable moments that were well worth watching for. Just... brace yourself for some seriously head-tilting plot twists and remind yourself how much you like the characters and off you go. *g*
